Abstract
An engine lathe is a versatile machine tool that can be used to perform a variety of
machining operations, including facing, turning, boring, and threading. In this lab, we
learned how to operate an engine lathe safely and correctly. We also learned how to
perform the basic machining operations on the engine lathe.
The first step in operating an engine lathe is to properly secure the workpiece in the
chuck. The next step is to select the appropriate cutting tool and speed. The cutting
tool should be sharp and the speed should be appropriate for the material being
machined. Once the workpiece is secure and the cutting tool is selected, the
operator can begin machining.
Facing is a machining operation that is used to create a flat surface on the end of a
workpiece. Turning is a machining operation that is used to create a cylindrical
shape on a workpiece. Boring is a machining operation that is used to enlarge an
existing hole. Threading is a machining operation that is used to create a spiral
groove on a workpiece.
In this lab, we performed facing, turning, boring, and threading operations on a
variety of materials. We also learned how to measure the dimensions of the
machined parts. The results of our experiments show that we were able to
successfully perform the basic machining operations on the engine lathe.
