1. Why do you think people in the two experiments stopped working after a point?
I think the two experiments stopped working because of how unvalued the people felt. The more and more it happened with their
motivation coming along they were motivated by the beginning but once it started becoming a trait of fixing the botanicals after
they already built them they lost the motivation to continue.
2. What is the IKEA effect, and how does it matter at work?
The IKEA effect is explained to have more value in what they are doing since they took the time to build and use it. Just exactly
as if you were to buy IKEA furniture and build it for yourself. You are excited and happy because your hard work paid off. In the
work aspect employees would feel a sense of accomplishment and value knowing the work they have is their own. Which would
allow them to create and become committed to see the accomplishment.
3. Which actions of the employees in the Seattle company displayed their lack of interest in the job? What could have been
done differently to avoid these?
They showed lack of interest and not committing to any assignment. Showing that the employees no longer had the
motivation to be creative. What could have helped them is having positive meetings with rewards, possibly giving the
employees a sense of their own dictatorship. And they could have talked to the employees saying it is a team aspect that
needs to be done that will benefit the company.
4. What are the theories/arguments of Karl Marx and Adam Smith?
Karm Marx- he believed that if you do the steps one at a time, you will not care about the production at the end, but if you work
on all 12 steps, you will care about the pin twice as much
Adam Smtih- he looked at the important notion of efficiency. The example I was given was pins in 12 steps. If one person did it
the production was very low, but if you get multiple groups of people to help complete the steps it’ll be a better product.
