Choice Book Four Assessment
Below is a list of assignments you are expected to complete by December 17. You need to
complete both of the following assignments.
1. “Sticky Notes” assignment - Review your book. As you do so, identify passages that
require a sticky note. Use the list below to help you identify noteworthy moments in the story.
By December 17, you should have at least five (5) sticky notes to turn in. Make a copy of the
document for your final list (use this as a format). On each sticky note, make sure you write
the quotation, citation, and at least two sentences. Make sure that you share your document
with me. If you do not share, you will receive a zero.
A. Tough Questions - A moment where the reader stops and asks a tough question.
Usually an “I wonder…” or “Why…”.
“Well in that case you look like Nosferatu. Who’s Nosferatu? A creepy vampire.”
I want to know why she is dark and why she likes to be punk. Does she think she
looks good being dark? In my personal opinion, I think that’s weird.
B. Words of the Wiser - When a character offers a life lesson to the reader or to another
character.
C. Aha! Moment - The moment when the reader suddenly figures out something
important that hadn’t made sense before.
D. Again & Again - When an image, word, or situation is repeated so often that the
reader wonders at its importance to the story.
“ Hey Maria Luisa, she finally said sitting down next to me. Its malú, I said.
I feel like this is important because Selena constantly said this to annoy her. I
don’t know why she dost want to call her by her nickname.
E. Contrasts & Contradictions - Something that happens in the story that is the opposite of
what the reader predicted or would expect to happen.
“ I know It’s probably hard being new, so I thought you could use some
help.”(66).
This is strange because Selena is normally really mean. So far in the book, we
can infer that’s she is the mean popular kid.
F. Memory Moment - A flashback or pause in the story to reflect back on a memory.
These often hold important information.
G.This feels important because… - A note you make because it feels important.
“‘You got your Mexican from your Mom and your punk from me,’ he’d say.” (42).
This is important Because this is very important for her mom. Her mom always brings
up how she is not only white but Mexican.
H. Figurative Language - This is not just an example, this is an example of figurative
language that adds to the understanding of character, plot, setting, or theme.
“Señora Oralia was sitting on a rocker on a porch. The sound of a woman’s
voice, kind of mournful, almost like a wounded animal.” (87).
This shows Ms Oralia at habits while she does stuff and how her voice sounds. This
is also a great example of a simile and imagery.
2. Sketchbook - You will be writing two paragraphs. The first one will concern the mood of
your choice book, and the second, the tone. This is a deep dive, and should not be done
until you have finished reading your book. Remember to “borrow” from the question to be
able to create a topic sentence for each paragraph. Each paragraph must follow proper
formatting (introduction sentence, evidence, explanation of evidence, and a conclusion
sentence). Provide at least two quotes (evidence from the text) and then cite it in MLA
Format, like this: “Quote” (Page #). Along with the two paragraphs, you must include at least
two relevant images and the title and author of your text. All of the elements above must be
included in your sketchbook. This is a “ONE PAGER” in your Sketchbook.
What is the mood of the story? How does the mood change throughout the story? How does
the mood contribute to the theme of the story?
What is the tone of the story? How does the tone change throughout the story? How does
the tone contribute to the theme of the story?
