Projectile Motion
We have solved motion problems in 1 dimension but with 2 dimensional problems we need to break motion
into the two 1 dimensional parts (x and y components) and then recombine them to produce a final answer.
Ex 1) A cannonball is shot out of a cannon upwards with a horizontal velocity of 40 𝑚⁄𝑠 [𝑅] and vertical
velocity of 20 𝑚⁄𝑠 [𝑈𝑝]. If the cannon is sitting at the top of a cliff that is 100 m high,
a) How far right will the cannonball travel?
b) What is the cannonballs final velocity when it hits the ground?
Ex 2) A soccer ball is kicked at a velocity of 25 𝑚⁄𝑠 at an angle of 35° to the ground.
a) Find the maximum height of the ball.
b) Find the time it takes for the ball to land on the ground.
c) How far horizontally does the ball travel?
d) What is the final velocity of the ball when it hits the ground?
