BIBLIOGRAPHY ........................................................................................................ 40 Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 1 CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction In every individual's life, teenagers are in between childhood and adulthood. It means that in ages 13-18, teenagers experience big changes such as in physical, emotional, and social life. They begin also become mature and adult-like. The fulfilment that they obtain from their choices depend on their experience, motivation, engagement and achievement in life and also in school. (Ryan, 2000). Youth are in time of hard position to decide and think about the consequences in terms of their responsibility to academics, family, and even in religion (Ryan 2002). They begin to ask questions like “What is the importance of education or do I really have to go to school?” When youth make friends, they develop important life skills. These include getting along with other people, being independent and learning how to sort out conflicts and problems. These skills are important for every adolescence to learn because youth who get along with others are less likely to have social and emotional difficulties later in life. He determines that one of the only true choices we make in life is our environment, and the friends we surround ourselves with. This has a tremendous influence on `us because everything flows from there (Jewish Kabbalists). While friendship plays a very large and important role in the social and emotional development of adolescence that lasts well into adulthood, academic achievement also has been shown to influence Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 2 future outcomes. They provide support and resources and can both encourage and discourage academic achievement and play a significant and important role throughout the course of one’s life. Having academic achievement of every adolescence is a key to determine the future of educational and occupational success of their life. Students' academic success is largely influenced by the people around them like friends and high-achieving classmates. In their school life, they socialize more with different people and they consult about their studies. Students are socialized by the people with whom they associate through their daily interaction over the years. They tend to have a positive effect on others' and learn skills of interpersonal interaction. At present, children spend the majority of their time in school, and it is well known that cognitive development is most crucial during the first few years of school. Just as children’s social customs are taught and fostered through social interaction with others, academic achievement can be affected by those with whom children socialize. Background of the Study Friendship is considered as one of the important academic influences. Friendship tends to have big impact on student educational processes as friendship means more than just playmates. Friendship plays an important role in developing social skills, such as communicating, learning how to cooperate and will help students in solving problems. Also, students are more comfortable Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 3 in studying with friends. But that all depends on what type of friends you have as high achievers tends to have friends with high achiever while low achiever chose to hang outs with low achievers. According to (Dechant, 2011) having a strong friendships can affect and benefits the mental state of every human and even making their live much longer, it influence every individual in positive or negative of both emotion, physical , and even intellectual state. Furthermore, it is a source of having students a companionship, motivation, physical support, affection and even all of the degree of importance upon the time of development stage. The role of peer academic development can be seen in (Kindermann, 2016) he stated that motivation is a reason why students academically like and enjoy learning in school, participate in school activities persist in academic tasks and believe that school is important because of their friends surrounded by them. He also added that peer characteristics of having friends are similarly shown a connected to student’s decision for academic purpose versus to non-academic activities during class time and beyond, to engagement with schoolwork, as well as to their ability of attributions for success and failure, and even their value of academic standards, their academic aspirations, school involvement, class participation and overall adjustment to school. The study of (Wilson, 2016) reported that peer group within and beyond the classroom, can have a significant impact on students achievements in many cases like friend are direct source Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 4 of students achievements rather than parents or teachers. It also highlighted that friends’ open norms that either role-model or discourage students on having engagement and successful academic performance. Purpose of the Statement The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between friends and academic performance of students and to know the role of friendship in high school students experience if it can have a negative or positive effect to the studies of high school students. Specifically, this study first described the pattern of friendship among high school students and examined the relationship between friendship and the influence of friendship to the academic performance. Finally, the study sought to explain the subtle differences in the types of friendship based on behavior and influence. Statement of the Problem Our study aims to determine the effects of friends in the academic performance of grade 9 and 10 students in Maranatha Christian Academy and if friends can affect the academic performance of the students in negative or positive way. This study will attempt to find answer for the following questions: 1) How may the demographic profile of respondents be described in term of: 1.1 Age 1.2 Gender Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 5 2) Do friends largely impact students’ academic performance? 3) How many respondents benefit from of the influence of their friends? 4) How many respondents does not benefit from the influence of their friends? Hypotheses The following hypotheses are formulated: Null Hypothesis 1. There is no significant impact of friendship in academic motivation and success of students. Alternative Hypotheses 1. There is significant impact of friendship in academic motivation and success of students. Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 6 Conceptual Framework The framework shows below use the input-process-output model to determine the factors that lead to effective as well as the processes and to better specify how, why and when this study will contribute. Also, to understanding and explaining the effects of friends on the academic performance of selected students which is the Grades 9 and 10. INPUT/DATA Demographic profile of respondents Age Gender -survey results MODEL/PROCESS Data collection Research Survey Questions Data Analysis Analysis interpretation OUTPUT Action plan/writing drafts The first diagram shows the input or a data of study including the demographic profile of respondents that have age and name and also the research survey questions. Second is the process of Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 7 this study which include the data collection, a yes or no questionnaire that will be given to all grade 9 and 10 students and the data gathering that will compile the results, then analyze by interpretation of the data that given to grade 9 and 10 students of Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao. Lastly the output of our process that will create the researchers an action plan that will discuss and have a recommendation, tips and studies on the effects of friends on the academic performance of students it will be given not only for students but also for teachers, parents, administrator, and future researches that interested to this study. Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 8 Theoretical Framework Thus study was from “Tight-knit Theory” Janice McCabe (2016) “Friends with Academic Benefits” of Dartmouth College. The theory explained that people are like clusters that are associated to each other like a ball of yarn. This study shows that having friends in relation to your academic performance has benefits and detriments. To be more credible, McCabe interviewed students including Valerie of MU University, who have numerous friends and according to Valerie, she sees her friends as her “family” who encouraged and supported her that led her to success in which McCabe referred to as the ‘tightknitters’, wherein she said that. Being accompanied by many people in which they all know each other. Moreover, McCabe said that being inside the “Tight-knit network” could also put someone fed up by influencing them to pay less attention on their studies. In addition, social scientists who studied the effects of friends in academic performance which includes James Coleman and Judith Rich Harris, “Peer culture within high school shapes students’ social and academic aspirations and successes.” Coleman argued during the late 1900s. On the other hand, Harris’ research which she made recently, shows that some students choose to follow their friends over their parents. Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 9 In conclusion, it clearly shows that friends have a major role in a student’s academic performance and being with friends could influence a student to either focus more or to pay less attention on their studies. Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 10 Significance of the Study The study shows importance in different social groups: • The students will gain information presented that enable them to gain awareness and gives them better knowledge when it comes in choosing their friends. • The result will guide the teachers to teach students and make lesson plans regarding the effects of friendship that will benefit the students. • The outcome of this study will show the parents the importance of their kids’ friends and help them to give advice and moral lessons. • The information of the outcome study will help the researchers to have more ideas and find some strong finding about their conduct study • The ideas presented may be used as reference data that may help future researchers to open their mind and also conduct same study as well in the next years. Scope and Delimitation This study focused on effects of friendship on Grade 9-10 students of Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao S.Y. 2019-2020. Audience: The total respondents are 195 students. There are 118 students in Grade 9 (three sections), and there are 77 students and in Grade 10 (two sections). Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 11 Definition of Terms Peer and youth – children’s classmates Friendship – relation between people with common habits and interest Academic performance – evaluation of students’ expected performance on MCA academic activities in the classroom Dyadic Relationship – specifically, sociology: two sociologically significant relationship individuals maintaining a Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 12 CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES This chapter is a review of the existing literature relevant to the topic of peer influence among students. More specifically, this chapter is a review of topics including: meaning of friendships; what friendships provide for students; motivation and engagement of students; facts about peer relations; and local literature and studies. Foreign Literature and Studies I. Definitions of Friendship Friendship is form of dyadic relationship that has received the most attention from those studying student’s peer encounters (Rubin, 1998). Friendship has been defined “as having an attraction to someone who is attracted in return” (Hartup & Stevens, 1998). According to Rubin (1998), both sides must willingly acknowledge the relationship in order for it to be considered a friendship. II. Impact of Friends to Academic Performance Teachers and parents should be aware that friends provide positivity and negativity for students. Castrogiovanni (2002) cited the following that improves students’ performance: (1) the opportunity to learn how interact with others; (2) support in defining identity, interests, abilities, and personality; (3) opportunites for witnessing the strategies others use to cope with similar problems, and observing how effective they are; (4) involved emotional support. Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 13 Peers can provide an environment where adolescents can construct and improve their identities, according to Black (2002). Moreover, he stated that this environment contributes to construction of positive and negative performance for some students. Unfortunately, this environment may increase or decrease levels of defiant behavior and possibility of academic failure (Downs and Rose, 1991). Research has shown that most children who have positive peer relationships (i.e. have friends and liked by classmates) also do well academically (Fantuzzo, Sekino, and Cohen, 2004; Birch and Rubbs, 1996; Ladd, Kochenderfer, and Coleman, 1996). James Jacard, professor of psychology of the University at Albany in New York, cited that students might be influenced as much by what they think their peers are doing as by what they are really doing. Evidence supports that an intervention in peer situations changes academic performance (Coie and Kribiel, 1984). According to DiLalla, Marcus, and Wright-Phillips (2004), student’s harmony with their friends is a huge factor of academic success. They learned that enhancing social skills of students yielded social and as well as academic benefits. Based on Coie and Kribiel’s research (1994), students who have better social skills were more likely to have better higher grades and those who have poor student-friend relationship were more likely to have lower grades. Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 14 III. Motivation and Engagement of Students Another important part of friendship is motivation. Ryan (2000) found that friends were influential regarding changes in students’ value for academic performance. Furthermore, he found that having friends who have a positive effect toward school increased students’ own academic motivation and effort; and having friends who have a negative effect toward school decreased it. For some friends, other interests may take charge over academic life (Ryan, 2000). According to him, these interests could change adolescent’s motivation and engagement in academics. In addition, he cited that some friends may play a large role in supporting and fostering their academic-related beliefs and behaviour. IV. Facts about Peer Relations Lingren (1995) cited some facts about peer relations. During adolescence, students and their parents are more physically and physiologically distant from one another. This is a normal process, but it is shown in decreases in emotional closeness, increases in parent-children disagreements, and in time spent with peers. In addition, increase of family problems can cause teenagers to depend more on their friends for emotional support. It shows that family affects how peer relations develop and operate. Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 15 Local Literature and Studies Peer Influence in Academic Results revealed that there was huge difference in peer influence in students’ study habits when based to age, sex, civil status, ethnic affiliation and year level (Dumaga & Guray, 2017). According to Moldes, Biton, Gonzaga & Minerva (2019), students perceive that they agree with that they are accompanied by their friends in school; and they are likely to socialize among others and find attention with their friends. Moreover, the researchers found out that students perceive that they need their friends in order to do certain academic activities. Based on study of Mascardo, Mauricio & Espinosa (2013), they stated that students are influenced by peer actions in their school and academic activities. Research made by Comeo, Cortes & Cultura (2018) on students with ages 14 and above from Southwestern University found that there was a significant relationship between peer influence and motivation to improve academic performance. I. Norms and value of barkada Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 16 Based on the study made by Jennifer Ann Lajom, Nico Canoy, Rajiv Amarnani, Apryl Mae Parcon, Paula Melizza Valera (2009) they said that one of the norm of friendship or what we called “barkada” is help and protection that were expected to abide in every friend relationship. It means that in friendship every individual should be able to help each other and look out of each other. Next is damayan or an act of someone to share affliction is also highlighted in norm of barkada. Another is a notion of “pakikisama” which to express the desire to participate and share the collective decision and experiences of whole friends. This norm can help students to have a strong quality of friendship and affect their performance in school because it reveals the true self pertained or concern and display transparency in word and deed that reflect one's genuine characteristics among the members of the barkada which this expected not to display the denoted dishonest or what we called “plastic”. Aside from valuing others, the individual also learned to value one's self. Including learned to take time to "take care", "prioritize", and "give importance" to one's self, allowed them to acknowledge one's own self-worth, as well as an avenue for developing skills that would enhance his/ her potentials like enhance their self-confidence, and facilitate further self-improvement by this it express the trust of one another as a human being Maranatha Christian Academy of Cabuyao #515 National Highway Barangay Sala, Cabuyao City, Laguna 17 And finally with benefits friendship they learned achieve the resoluteness of every day challenges or called “katatagan” and learn to remain strong and viewed suffering as a less negative light. Synthesis The related literature and study presented above aim to inform the students about the impacts of their friends to their academic performance. This chapter focuses on friendship and its huge role to academic performance. Moreover, this chapter discusses what affects peer relations. After we gathered all the related literature and study, researchers found out that friendships have benefits such as higher grades and academic skills of students. However, they also found out that friends may lessen academic motivation and effort. The result shows some friends enhance academic skills and improve academic performance of students. The researcher would like to conduct a questionnaire to the Grade 910 students of the school about the influence of peers to the students. The aims of this study would determine the results of the surveillance and to distinguish those students who are affected by the quality of friendship.
