How did the author portray good and evil?
The author of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde reveals his idea by saying,
“Man is not truly one, but truly two”. Hidden details in the novel reveal how the author, Robert
Louis Stevenson, portrays the duality of characters. The main idea of Stevenson was that every
human being always has an evil side, which is not often revealed to others. Due to this idea,
Stevenson describes Dr. Jekyll as a well-respected and intelligent man who secretly had a dark and
immoral side. The hidden side of Dr. Jekyll was gradually revealed through the active movement
of Mr. Hyde. Through this transformation in Dr. Jekyll’s personality and behavior, the author
describes the duality in human nature. The specific ways in which Robert Louise stevenson
portrays the good and evil in the novel are by depicting the characteristics of Dr. Jekyll, the
behavior of Mr. Hyde, and the struggle of Dr. Jekyll between the two sides.
At the beginning of the book, Dr. Jekyll was considered an intelligent, wise, and respected
man of society. His personality was described as kind, generous, and wise. Moreover, he was in a
high status as a doctor and scientist, along with his high education level and intelligence.
