Approval of ASME Code Case 3085
Dear Mr. Garbolevsky,
On January 23, 2024 the ASME Board on Pressure Technology Codes and Standards (BPTCS)
administratively approved Code Case 3085, Use of 2020 Edition of ASME B31.1 in lieu of the 2022
Edition of ASME B31.1 for Qualification of NDE Personnel for Visual Examination (VT), Liquid Penetrant
Testing (PT), and Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) required for Boiler External Piping (BEP) on Section I
Boilers. Since approval by the BPTCS constitutes final approval by the Society, this Code Case may be
used beginning with the date of approval noted above.
A draft copy of Code Case 3085 is attached for your convenience. Code Case 3085 is scheduled to be
published in Supplement 4 of 2023 ASME BPVC Code Cases: Boilers and Pressure Vessels.

Inquiry: Under what condi�ons may paragraph 136.3.2, "Qualifica�on of NDE Personnel" from the 2020
Edi�on of ASME B31.1 be used in lieu of paragraph 136.3.2, "Qualifica�on of NDE Personnel" from the
2022 Edi�on of ASME B31.1 for the qualifica�on of NDE personnel for Visual Examina�on (VT), Liquid
Penetrant Tes�ng (PT), and Magne�c Par�cle Tes�ng (MT) as required for boiler external piping on
Sec�on I boilers?
Reply: It is the opinion of the Commitee that paragraph 136.3.2, "Qualifica�on of NDE Personnel" from
the 2020 Edi�on of ASME B31.1 may be used in lieu of paragraph 136.3.2, "Qualifica�on of NDE
Personnel" from the 2022 Edi�on of ASME B31.1 for the qualifica�on of NDE personnel for Visual
Examina�on (VT), Liquid Penetrant Tes�ng (PT), and Magne�c Par�cle Tes�ng (MT) as required for boiler
external piping on Sec�on I boilers, provided the following requirements are met:
(a) The requirements of paragraph 136.3.2 of the 2020 Edi�on of ASME B31.1 are documented in
the Manufacturer’s writen prac�ce.
(b) The Manufacturer shall have a copy of the 2020 Edi�on of ASME B31.1.
(c) All other requirements of the 2022 Edi�on of ASME B31.1 shall be met.
(d) All other requirements of ASME Sec�on I boiler external piping shall be met.
(e) This Case number shall be shown on the Manufacturer’s Data Report.
