My LOHAS Profile: NOMADIC
This means that I care about some environmental problems, but not all of them.
Sustainability is important to me in different parts of my life, but it doesn't mean I live a
completely LOHAS lifestyle.
Answer 1:
I am an international student from India at Douglas College in Canada. Living a fully
LOHAS lifestyle is hard for me right now, even though I believe in its ideals. The main problems
I'm having are:
Because I'm a foreign student, I have to stick to a tight budget. Because many sustainable
products cost more, it's hard for me to always choose the environmentally friendly choices,
especially since I scored lower on being willing to pay more for them.
Limits on time: When you're studying, working part-time, and getting used to a new
society, you don't have much time to look into sustainable options or get involved in community
projects that support LOHAS values. I am still learning about sustainable options, recycling
systems, and environmental habits that are different in Canada than they are in India because I
3
just moved there. The cultural transition between my Indian past and Canadian consumer culture
makes it hard for me to make decisions, and during this time of adjustment, sustainability isn't
always the most important thing. Even with these problems, I try to be more environmentally
friendly by doing things like wasting less food, taking the bus, and buying from green businesses
when I can.
Answer 2:
There are a few things that would make me more interested in LOHAS:
Better financial situation: When I finish school and start working, having more money
will help me make choices that are good for the environment without sacrificing other important
needs.
Community connection: Making friends with other environmentally conscious people in
Canada would give you the drive and information to incorporate LOHAS practices into your
daily life.
As I get used to Canadian society, I'll be able to better combine the lasting values of my
Indian heritage with those of my new home. This will help me come up with a useful way to do
LOHAS that respects both cultures.
Education and awareness: I could make better decisions that are in line with LOHAS
values if I kept learning about how my choices affect the world and what other options are
available.
Access to options: It would be easier for students like me to switch to a LOHAS lifestyle
if there were more sustainable options that were both cheap and easy to find.
It takes time to move toward a more LOHAS-focused way of life. I think that as my stability,
knowledge, and resources grow, I can slowly incorporate more sustainable practices into my life
while still staying true to my culture and meeting my needs as an international student.
