I. CURRICULUM CONTENT, STANDARDS, AND LESSON COMPETENCIES
A. Content Standards
The learners have knowledge and understanding of
simple patterns and number sentences
.
B. Performance Standards
By the end of the quarter, the learners are able to
generate a simple pattern and describe the rule used. (NA)
C. Learning Competencies
The learners will be able to:
complete a number sentence:
a. to represent a property of operations (e.g., 4 + 3 = 3 + __)
(commutative property of addition)
b. to represent equivalent number facts (e.g., 4 + __ = 6 + 3)
D. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners will able to
complete a number sentence:
a. to represent a property of operations (e.g., 4 + 3 = 3 + __)
(commutative property of addition)
b. to represent equivalent number facts (e.g., 4 + __ = 6 + 3)

Review
A.Activating Prior Knowledge
Find the answer to each question.
1) 9 − 4 + 3 x 8 = ______
2) 5 x 5 − 3 x 2 = ______
3) 6 x 5 + 6 + 4 = ______
4) 8 x 5 + 10 − 12 = ______
5) 6 x 4 + 10 − 3 = ______
1.Lesson Purpose
What does MDAS mean?
Equivalent number facts refer to number sentences that
yield identical numerical outcomes or results when
computed despite variations in the arrangement or
composition of numbers and operations.
B. Establishing Lesson Purpose
Example 1. 2+ 3 = 5 and 1 + 4 = 5, thus 2 + 3 = 1 + 4.
2. Unlocking Content Vocabulary
Pattern is defined as a sequence of repeating
objects, shapes, or numbers. A pattern has a
rule that tells us which objects belong to the
pattern and which objects do not belong to the
pattern.
Number sentences are a combination of
numbers and mathematical operations.
C. Developing and Deepening
Understanding
1. Explicitation
Giving more examples
Example 1. Determine the value of N in the number
sentence.
8 + 12 = N × 4
Solution.
8 + 12 = N × 4
20 = N × 4
To get the missing factor: 20 ÷ 4 = N
Answer: 20 ÷ 4 = 5, therefore N = 5.
Example 2. Determine the value of N in the number
sentence.
64 - 8 = 25 + N
Solution.
64 - 8 = 25 + N
56 = 25 + N
To get the missing addend: 56 - 25 = N
Answer: 56 - 25 = 31, therefore N = 31.
Which part is difficult to answer?
Why?
What should be remembered in performing varied
operations?

Match the number sentence in Column A with the correct
value of N in Column B.
Column A
1. 2 x N + 3 = 17
2. (N - 5) x 4 = 16
3. 18 / (N + 1) = 3
4. 3 x N - 7 = 11
5. (N + 2) / 3 = 4
6. 4 x (N - 2) = 20
7. 24 ÷ N + 5 = 11
8. 5 x N - 12 = 23
9. (N / 2) + 6 = 10
10. 3 x (N + 1) - 5 = 19
Column B
A. N = 12
B. N = 7
C. N = 4
D. N = 8
E. N = 6
F. N = 5
G. N = 9
H. N = 11
I. N = 3
J. N = 2
3.Lesson Activity
The pupils will work in groups.
Translate the word problems into number sentences and
solve for N.
1. "Sarah had N apples. She gave 3 to her friend and
had 7 left. How many apples did Sarah have
originally?"
2. "John earned PhP5 for each hour he worked. He
worked N hours and earned PhP30. How many
hours did he work?"
3.
D. Making Generalizations
"A box contains N candies. If you divide them
equally among 4 friends, each friend gets 6 candies.
How many candies were in the box?"
