GSL speech -Addressing the issue of waste management Honorable Chair, esteemed delegates, The delegate of Hungary recognizes the urgent need to address global waste management issues to safeguard our environment and public health. As a member of the European Union, Hungary remains committed to the principles of the Waste Framework Directive, which promotes waste prevention, reuse, recycling, and energy recovery. While Hungary has implemented mandatory separate waste collection for paper, plastic, metal, and glass since 2015, our recycling rate of 38% still falls short of the EU average of 48%, highlighting the need for continued improvements. Through the National Waste Management Plan (NWMP) 2021-2027, Hungary aims to transition to a circular economy model by reducing waste generation, increasing recycling, and fostering innovation in waste management. Recent measures like the extended producer responsibility (EPR) and the upcoming 2024 deposit return schemes are key steps toward sustainable waste practices. However, challenges persist. Illicit waste trafficking across borders remains a concern, and Hungary calls for stronger international cooperation to enhance enforcement and data-sharing mechanisms to combat hazardous waste movement. We believe that by working together, we can advance global efforts toward a zero-waste future that benefits both the environment and our economies. Thank you.
