The continents are surrounded by continental shelf. A continental
shelf is the part of the continent that is submerged in the sea under
shallow water. Continental shelf is represented here by dots.
Glossopteris was a seed fern whose fossils date back to around
300 million years ago. Color areas where Glossopteris fossils have
been found green.
Kannemeyerid was a large reptile. It was a plant-eater that had large
tusks and claws to dig up underground plants and roots. Color areas
where Kannemeyerid fossils have been found blue.

Lystrosaurus was a land reptile that lived around 230 million years ago.
Evidence from fossils suggests that they were poor swimmers. Color
areas where Lystrosaurus fossils have been found orange.
Mesosaurus was a reptile that lived in lakes, bays, and estuaries around
240 million years ago. It was about a half of a meter long and could swim
and walk on land. Color areas where Mesosaurus fossils have been found red.
