Diatomics are used for all balanced equations
Monoatomic atom is used for empirical formula calculations (chapter 4)
Diatomics- BrINClHOF - Br2, I2, N2, Cl2, H2, O2, F2(rule of seven)
Atomic Weights
● AMU(Atomic Mass Unit)- a unit based on the value of exactly 12 amu for the mass of
C12
1.66054E-24 *6.02214E-23 = 1.000g
● Divide the percentage by 100 then multiply by amu to get fractional abundance then
add then verify with periodic table.

●
Atomic number - is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
For a Neutral atom, the protons and neutrons are equal
Mass number = protons +neutrons
