Food Beliefs: India & Ghana Similarities

TOPIC: SELECT ONE COUNTRY
AND THEIR BELIEFS ON FOOD
AND SOME SIMILAR BELIEFS WE
HAVE AS WELL.
BY ELSIE,ROHAN,KAILA AND PAUL
INTRODUCTION
• Many countries share similar
food beliefs to Ghana, but our
group has chosen India as the
country with the most similar food
beliefs.
BEEF(COW)
• Beef is commonly eaten in Ghana, but some
groups, particularly Muslims, avoid it unless
it is slaughtered according to Islamic rites. In
India, beef is not consumed by many Hindus
because cows are revered as sacred, seen as
gods or goddesses, and valued for providing
milk and other dairy products.
PORK(PIG)
• While pork is consumed in some
regions of India, particularly in parts of
the Northeast (e.g., in Nagaland and
Goa), it is not a common food in many
other parts of India. Ghana: In Ghana,
pork is also not among some ethnic
groups, because of religious beliefs.
Muslims avoid pork as it is considered
*haram* (forbidden) in Islam.
SEAFOOD
• Seafood is commonly consumed in
both India and Ghana, but certain
groups avoid it for religious or
cultural reasons. In India, some
Hindus avoid seafood due to their
vegetarian diet, while in Ghana,
Muslims may refrain from eating
seafood based on specific
interpretations of dietary laws.
INSECTS
• Insects like crickets and locusts may be
eaten in some rural or tribal areas of
India. Similarly, while insects such as
grasshoppers and locusts are eaten in
certain regions of Ghana, they are not a
regular part of the typical diet for most of
the population.
