Beijing Daxing International Airport, one of the worlds largest airports, was designed to alleviate congestion at Beijing Capital International Airport and to support the growing air traffic demands of the Beijing metropolitan area. Since it’s inauguration in September 2019, Daxing Airport has aimed to become a significant aviation hub, with expectations to handle up to 100 million passengers and 4 million tons of cargo annually by 2040. Assessment of goals, Original goals: the primary objective for Beijing Daxing International Airport included enhancing the transportation infrastructure, improving passenger experience, boosting economic development, and integrating advanced technology to become a green and efficient airport. 1.) Enhancing transportation infrastructure: Daxing Airport was planned as a mega-hub with advanced connectivity to highways and a high-speed rail network. Its location strategically serves both Beijing and nearby areas like Hebei and Tianjin. The airport has successfully implemented this infrastructure, connecting seamlessly to various modes of transportation, significantly improving accessibility. 2.) Improving passenger experience: The airport was designed with a starfish shape to minimize walking distances for passengers. Reports and passenger reviews suggest that the design has achieved its purpose, offering a convenient and user-friendly layout that enhances the passenger experience through reduced transfer times and easily navigable terminals. 3.) Boosting economic development: As part of China’s broader economic plan, Daxing Airport was expected to be a growth catalyst for the southern Beijing region. It has attracted considerable investment in the airport vicinity, including new business developments and international collaborations, thus contributing positively to local and national economic growth. 4.) Integrating advanced technology and sustainability: The airport incorporates several environmentally friendly technologies and designs, aiming to be one of the greatest airports in the world. Features such as photovoltaic power generation system, a rainwater collection and water management system, and geothermal heating and cooling have set new standards ins sustainable airport design. Revised goals: Given the unforeseen global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Daxing Airport had to adapt its operational strategies and expectations. The drastic reduction in international travel affected passenger numbers, prompting a shift towards domestic flights and cargo services, which have shown resilience and growth during the pandemic. Conclusion, Beijing Daxing International Airport has largely met its original goals in terms of infrastructure, passenger experience, and economic impact. The sustainability and technological integrations have set benchmarks for future airport designs globally. While the COVID-19 pandemic required some adjustment of goals towards more domestic and cargo services, the airport has shown flexibility and capability in managing these changes effectively. As travel restrictions ease, Daxing is wellpositioned to resume its path towards becoming one of the leading international hubs in the aviation industry,
