Why Am I Facing An Error Accessing
QBW File In Multi-User Mode?
Did you get an error accessing QBW file in Multi-User mode? If so, then this guide can
help you eliminate that error instantly. A QBW file is the main file used by QuickBooks
to store a company's financial data and records. It is also known as the company file.
Users may encounter errors when they open the company file in multi-user mode. It can
happen due to issues with the QB Database server manager, firewall settings, and
unauthorized access. Let’s discuss how to fix this issue and access the files without any
problem.
Reasons For Multi-User Mode Issue
Errors may arise while accessing QBW files in multi-user mode due to the following reasons.
 Not having QuickBooks installed on the server can lead to issues when trying to use the program in multiuser mode.
 If the hosting settings are not set up correctly, users may be unable to access company files while
collaborating.
 Your firewall or antivirus software might be causing problems. If they are not configured properly, multiuser mode may not function correctly.
 Any glitches or issues with the database server can prevent access to the files.
 If Windows file permissions are not configured correctly, it can interfere with multi-user mode and result
in errors.
Resolving Multi-User Mode Errors
Now that you have understood the reasons for multi-user mode errors let's discuss the
troubleshooting steps to fix them.
Solution 1: Enable hosting on the server computer
Enabling hosting on the server allows QuickBooks to manage multiple users who are
accessing files together. If you did not do the correct hosting setup, the company file error,
such as QuickBooks error -6000, -77 can appear.
 Open QuickBooks.
 Navigate to the File menu.
 Hover over Utilities.
 Select Host Multi-User Access.
 Click Yes.
Note: To fix the Windows permission issues, right-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon and
select Run as Administrator. Also, check your firewall settings and modify them properly.
Solution 2: Install QuickBooks Database Server Manager
 Make sure you have the installation file ready.
 Close QuickBooks if it’s open.
 Open the setup file (Setup_QuickBooks.exe).
 Follow the on-screen instructions.
 Have your product or license numbers ready.
 Choose your installation type:
 Select “Custom” or “Network Options.” Avoid “Express” as it may replace your existing QuickBooks Desktop.
 If you want to use QuickBooks Desktop on the same computer and share the company file over the network, choose
“I’ll be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer, AND I’ll be storing our company file here so it can be shared over our network.”
 If you only need the Database Server Manager, select “I will NOT be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer.”
 Complete the installation by following the instructions and clicking “Install” when prompted.
Note: QuickBooks will create a new Windows user account for each version of the Database Server Manager (like QBDataServiceUser33 for
2023). Ensure this user has access to the folders where your company files are stored.
Conclusion
We hope that by following the above solutions, you can successfully resolve the error
accessing QBW file in Multi-User mode.
