Topic or Unit: Evacuation & Food Ration
By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to;
i. Explain the meaning of evacuation and food ration
ii. Explain why children were evacuated
iii. Discuss why rationing of food is important
iv. Compare a war time menu with a modern day menu

1. The lesson ill be introduce by reviewing relevant previous
knowledge of learners and link it to today’s topic for
discussion. (Time Max or 3 minutes)

I Do: Topic (10 minutes) (Teacher lead)
• Explain to learners that Evacuation was the process in WW II
where children were taken away from their towns or homes
to the country side for protection.
• Children were mostly evacuated during the war

Rearmament
• Rearmament was the process by which Adolf rearm his
troops to invade other sovereign state.
• From 1939 , Hitler began to secretly build up his army and air
force.
• Britain and France did nothing to prevent this from
happening. They were worried about the power of the Soviet
Union

The Sudetenland and Czechoslovakia
• In September,1938 Hitler demanded that Sudetenland area
of Czechoslovakia unite with Germany
• Hitler demanded that the people who lived there were
German and wanted to unite with Germany.
• The British prime Minister visited Hitler 3 times to attempt to
prevent war
• This policy was known as appeasement. They signed the
Munich Pact. Chamberlain declared that this was a ‘a peace
in our time’.

• Explain to learners that the first wave occurred two days
before the start of WWII
• Second wave occurred in June 1940 ( the Battle of Britain )
• September 1940 ( the Blitz)

Holocaust
• Holocaust was the systematic murder of Europe’s Jews by
their Nazi collaborators during WWII
• On 9th Nov, 1938, there was a night of violent attacks on Jews
and their homes, businesses and synagoques. This was
known as Kristallnacht ( night of broken glasses)
• By the end of the war over six million Jewish people had
been killed and thousands of other victims Persecuted.

War in Europe
• By April 1940 Germany had invaded Holland and France. The
speed of the German attacks was known as Blitzkrieg
(lightning war). They took the Allies by surprise
• British and French troops Had been pushed back to the
beaches of Dunkirk. They were now trapped between
German army and the English channel.
• The only chance of escape was by sea.
• In May 1940 the British government put a plan into action
known as the operation Dynamo

• The aim of the operation Dynamo was to evacuate 300000
soldiers by ship from the beaches of Dunkirk
• The royal navy was used to transport men safely from the
Dunkirk

Battle of Britain
• After Dunkirk Hitler controlled all of western Europe. He
then made preparation to invade Britain. (operation Sealion)
• The first task was to use Germany air force (Luftwaffe) to
wipe out the British air force (RAF)
• The two air forces were evenly matched and Britain had
developed a radar system to detect German planes before
they reached the English coast.
• Although the Germans bombed many airfields, ports and
radar stations they could defeat the RAF

• Hitler called off Operation Sealion after two months . The
invasion of Britain had been prevented , and Hitler had
suffered his first defeat of the war

End of War
• On 6 June 1944 the D-Day invasion took place. 200 000
British and American soldiers landed in Normandy, Northern
France, and began advancing through France towards
Germany.
• The German army was being pushed further back towards
Germany as the British and Americans took control of Europe
• By 1945 it was clear to Hitler and his army that they were
going to be defeated

• By April the British, Americans and soviets were within days
of reaching Berlin and forcing Hitler to surrender
• On 30th April 1945 Hitler committed suicide.
• The war was over and Germany surrendered.
