Impurities in
Water
One Drop of
Water
Some impurities in water like
dissolved oxygen and metal
ions are essential for the health
of aquatic life. However, some
impurites like metals, plastics,
sewage, harmful microbes,
nitrates and phosphates are
harmful.
There can be a lot going on in
a single drop of ocean water. It
will most likely have millions of
bacteria and viruses. And it
could also have fish eggs,
baby crabs, plankton, or even
small worms.
Water's ability to dissolve a
wide range of substances is
unparalleled. It can dissolve
salts, acids, bases, gases, and
many organic compounds,
making it a crucial medium for
chemical reactions and
biological processes.
Water is one of the few
substances that can exist in all
three states (solid, liquid, and
gas) at the same time under
specific conditions. This
phenomenon is known as the
"triple point" and occurs at
precisely 0.01°C (32.018°F) and
611.657 pascals of pressure

Chemical tests using anhydrous
salts can tell you if water is
present. When there is
presence of water, cobalt(II)
chloride paper changes from
blue to pink. Copper(II) sulfate
changes from white to blue
You can determine if water is
pure by using physical tests
such as freezing point and
boiling point measurements.
Water freezes at exactly 0
degree Celsius. It boils at
exactly 100 degree Celsius.
The water that comes out of the
taps in homes often comes from
a river or lake. Some impurities,
like grains of sand just need to
be removed, but dangerous
microbes must be removed or
destroyed before it is safe to
drink.
Just 3.5 percent of Earth’s water is
fresh—that is, with few salts in it.
Earth’s freshwater can be found in
lakes, rivers, and streams, also
groundwater and glaciers. Over 68
percent of Earth’s freshwater is
locked up in ice and glaciers. And
another 30 percent is in
groundwater.
