The story of Shane – a heroin addict
I take my fix again. Slowly the voices screaming in my head become quiet. Calm returns. I lie
down and look at the ceiling. But I know that I have just six or eight hours before those voices
will scream again. I need money urgently.
I look in the mirror and I can’t believe what I see. Who is this pale, skinny, red-eyed person
staring back at me with his bruises and needle marks? He was someone I once liked. I can’t
stand who I see. I wish I could just end it all.Out on the street I start walking. There are cars in
the parking lot. These stupid people always leave bags in the cars. I watch carefully to see that
nobody is looking. The window shatters as I smash the brick into it. Maybe the bag has money in
it. Maybe food. I run for all I am worth.

Question 9: Write a paragraph explaining the role of oral traditions in Christianity (2), Judaism (2)
and African Traditional Religion (2) in South Africa. Evaluate the success of the oral tradition in
passing down information from one generation to another (4).
Christianity- holy book is the Bible, believed to be written by people of real occurrences.
Inspired by the Holy Spirit – old and new testament. New testament tells of life, death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ – oral in church – preaching, songs,
Judaism – holy book is Tanach – divided into 3 sections

Torah- (law books)

Nebiim – (prophetic books)

Ketubim – (peotic/writings)
Originally written on scrolls – telling the story of the Jewish faith , scriptures are read in
the synagogue and worshippers are required to memorise
African Traditional religion- no written scriptures – relies on oral traditions that are passed
from one generation to another. The wisdom of the ancestors play an important role/
influence.
The oral traditions of passing information is very successful because even though many
people may not read their scriptures or memorise – many listen to stories/ social media/
blogs/ podcasts which has a significant impact on peoples’ lives
