Cation Identification with Sodium Hydroxide

Sodium, potassium and ammonium hydroxides are soluble in water. Most other hydroxides are
insoluble in water.
Therefore, we can add sodium hydroxide to any salt and expect a precipitate of a characteristic
color and identify the cation.
