I Do: Topic (20mins) (Teacher leads)
A local or global issue happens because something is going
wrong or needs attention.
For example, if we talk about pollution, it happens because
people and industries release harmful things into the air,
water, or soil.
People may cause these issues for various reasons.
Sometimes, it's because they don't know better, and
sometimes it's because they want to make money or save
time. In the case of pollution, factories might release
chemicals to make products faster and cheaper.

Examples of global issues:
• Climate Change
• Poverty
• Hunger and Food Insecurity
• Global Health Pandemics
• Access to Education
• Water Scarcity
• Environmental Pollution
• Human Rights Violations
• Refugee and Migration Crises
• Conflict and War

Cause of global issues:
Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Economic Inequality
Lack of Education and Skills
Inadequate Agricultural Practices
Economic Factors
Gender and Cultural Barriers
Nature's Role: Sometimes, nature itself can cause issues. Natural disasters like
earthquakes, hurricanes, or droughts can lead to problems like damage to
homes, food shortages, and even displacement of people.

Consequences of global issues:
Externalities occur when an economic activity imposes costs
on third parties who are not directly involved in the activity.
These costs are often not fully accounted for by the parties
responsible for the activity.
• Examples:
Anto-Boase Explosion (Sept 2023)
Apiatse Explosion (Jan 2022)

Cont.
• Economic Impact: Economic problems in one part of the
world can have a domino effect on global economies. For
example, a financial crisis in one country can lead to a
recession or economic instability in others through trade
disruptions and financial contagion.
• Health Pandemics: Infectious diseases and pandemics, such
as COVID-19, can rapidly spread across borders, affecting the
health and well-being of people in multiple countries. It can
also lead to travel restrictions and economic challenges.

Cont.
• Environmental Issues: Climate change, pollution, and natural
disasters like hurricanes and tsunamis have global consequences.
Rising sea levels and extreme weather events, for instance, can
displace populations, disrupt food supplies, and damage
infrastructure worldwide.
• Migration and Displacement: Conflict, environmental
degradation, and economic instability in one region can lead to
mass migrations and refugee crises. This can place a burden on
neighboring countries and lead to strained international
relations.
• Resource Scarcity: Global resource depletion, such as water
scarcity or diminishing fossil fuels, can lead to conflicts over
access to these resources. This can result in international
tensions and even wars.

Cont.
• Human Rights Violations: Violations of human rights in one
country can lead to international condemnation and sanctions.
This can put pressure on the offending government to change its
behavior but can also have unintended consequences for the
population.
• Global Security: Terrorism, cyberattacks, and the proliferation of
weapons of mass destruction pose global security threats. The
actions of extremist groups or hostile governments can
destabilize regions and impact global security efforts.
• Social and Cultural Impact: Globalization and the spread of
information can lead to cultural diffusion. While this can enrich
societies, it can also lead to cultural erosion or clashes, affecting
local traditions and identities.

Cont.
• Education and Innovation: Access to education and technological
advancements can be hindered by global issues, particularly in
developing regions. This limits opportunities for personal and societal
growth.
• Trade and Economic Interdependence: Global issues, such as trade
disputes or tariffs, can disrupt the flow of goods and services, impacting
industries and livelihoods that rely on international trade.
• International Cooperation: Global issues often require international
cooperation to address effectively. Failures in cooperation can prolong
and exacerbate these problems.
• Food Security: Global food shortages or price spikes can result from
factors like climate change, conflicts, or supply chain disruptions. These
issues impact the ability of people to access adequate nutrition.
