Technical Specification
Distribution switchboards mounted internal of the vessel shall be totally enclosed, min IP44
rated and constructed of powder coated 1.6mm (min) steel or Polynova.
7.8 Power Isolation
All LV and ELV distribution switchboards are to have a mean of isolating the incoming power
supply in all active poles.
All LV “hard wired” equipment and appliances are to have a means of isolating the incoming
power in all active poles, by way of an isolator switch, located adjacent to its appliance. The
isolation switch is to be permanently labelled nominating its purpose.
7.9 Cable and Wiring
All LV and ELV cabling is to be double insulated.
All cable to meet the requirements stipulated in the NSCV and AS/NZ 3004.2 and to be
suitable for shipboard marine applications.
Wire conductors to be finely stranded annealed copper to meet IEC 60228 Class 5&6
regulations.
Cable insulation to be flame retardant, low smoke, zero halogen (LSZH), splash resistant to
oil, petrol, acid and sea water. Insulation to be rated to HF-90 minimum.
Where armoured cable is used, the armour is to be bonded to hull at both cable ends.
Where fire resistant cables are required, cable to meet the above mentioned and IEC 60331.
LV cable insulation colour code to comply with Australian Standards, as outlined in Table 1.
Earth conductor to be insulated in green/yellow and are reserved exclusively for earthing
only and not to be used for any other purpose.
LV wiring insulation colour codes as listed in table 1 does not include OEM equipment.
ELV cable insulation colour code is to be as per Table 2
ELV wiring insulation colour codes nominated in Table 2 does not include OEM equipment.
All LV and ELV cables are to be adequately supported, and where necessary shall be fixed
to cable trays. All cable trays are to be pressed aluminium. Where cables are suspended
overhead and tied up to the support.
Where cables are supported overhead with the possibility of dropping in event of a shipboard
fire, 316 stainless steel ties are to be included at 300mm intervals. Stainless ties are to be
used in addition to the normal securing and to be loose-fitting so as not to damage cable
insulation.
All wiring in the accommodation area and wheelhouse is to be concealed, but with suitable
access to cable at all areas.

Technical Specification
All LV wire connections to be made with crimp connectors, with no conductor to be exposed
after the electrical connection is made.
ELV battery connection to have either soldered or swaged terminals with a protective
insulated coating covering the transition from wire insulation to terminal. Where connection of
main battery cables are exposed, and or represent a risk of short circuit, the connections are
to be suitably insulated with rubber boots.
ELV connections, excluding battery connections, are to have either soldered or swaged
terminals with no exposed wire conductor between the wire and the terminal.
Watertight glands to be fitted where cables pass through watertight bulkheads, decks etc., an
approved watertight sealing gland is to be provided.
Where cabling is run on deck or other exposed areas it is to be run through suitable UV
stabilized PVC conduit and located so as to avoid mechanical damage. Where cable runs
are located in areas that are prone to mechanical damage, additional mechanical protection
may be required.
Cable penetrations are to be offered wherever a cable passes through a structure.
Penetration types may vary, depending on the type and structure thickness.

7.10 Batteries
All batteries are to be Valve Regulated Absorbed Glass Mat batteries and to be considered
as “maintenance free”.
Each battery is to be 12VDC where the nominated Ampere Hour is to be defined over a 20hr.
duration.
Where 24VDC is nominated, batteries are to be connected in series at the battery bank.
All batteries are to be housed in a secure, acid-proof battery box. Boxes are to be lined in a
non-conductive material and to include a suitable lid that can be easily removed for direct
access to the battery bank for maintenance and servicing.
