Disaster “any occurrence that causes damage, ecological disruption, loss of human life or deterioration of health and health services on a scale sufficient to warrant an extraordinary response from outside the affected community area.” World Health Organization (WHO) Typhoon Haiyan “Yolanda” Statistically... 80 natural disasters, 392 human-induced disasters, and 548 events combining both natural and human-induced hazards. These calamities resulted in 75,216 fatalities nationwide. Over 20.5 million individuals were affected, with more than 5 million displaced. Economic losses totaled approximately Php60.6 billion. Natural disasters accounted for 99% of the fatalities, 82% of those affected, and 98% of the damage to agriculture, infrastructure, and private properties. COVID-19 contributed to 98% of the fatalities, amounting to 74,008 deaths. Globally, the Philippines ranked among the ten most severely impacted countries by natural events. Typhoon Odette (I.N. Rai) in December ranked fourth globally in terms of both fatalities and affected population. The Philippines had one of the highest numbers of internal displacements due to natural disasters in 2021. Factors contributing to the Philippines' vulnerability include geographical and physical characteristics, environmental destruction, climate change, socio-economic issues, and political instability. The nation faces challenges such as low incomes, lack of education, poor health, inadequate housing, water, sanitation, and electricity, as well as violence, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic since 2019.
