IN-CLASS GROUP PROJECT EXERCISES (A-G) – Managing a Successful Company
Deliverable 1 – Comprehensive Summaries of Exercises A-C (10%)
You will be required to get into your groups in order to finalise the documentation of the in-class
group exercises for Deliverable 1. Please pay attention to the requirements outlined for each exercise
and the number of marks that are assigned to each exercise.
Exercise A (2%): In Session 5, your assigned group of 5-7 persons will be required to brainstorm
possible business initiatives that you will like to establish and operate after completing your programme
of study. Bearing in mind the concepts that have been explored in the course thus far, discuss the
various business ideas and narrow down your choice to one (1) initiative. Decide if you will:
(a) Start an entirely new business. OR
(b) Buy an existing business. OR
(c) Buy a franchise.
Imagine that you were to prepare a business plan to a financial institution or a potential investor(s),
outline your Business Description Segment [12 Marks], which must contain the following information:

List the Name of Business and Location –2 Mk
Description of the Industry with a PESTLE/PESTILN analysis –7 Mk
History of the (existing) Company OR Genesis of the (new) Business Idea – 3 Mk
Remember: In addition to listing the name and location of the business, this section must include a brief
description of the industry, conditions of the economy and who are your competitors. The History of the
business OR Genesis of the business idea must describe the company’s history and rationale, for its
operation in Trinidad and Tobago. Be sure to identify explicitly the range of products and services that
will be provided.

other relevant supplementary material, to outline your organisation’s Planning details [18 Marks], which
must contain the following information:

Define the Company’s Vision and Mission – 2 Mk
Outline its Strategies for four (4) Functions of the business (e.g. HR, R&D,
Finance, Production, Sales & Marketing, IT) – 8 Mk
Prepare a SWOT Analysis for the business – 8 Mk
Remember: the mission is born out of the vision therefore the vision must come before the mission.
The mission should be concise, compelling and easy to remember. Some suggested links for developing

In addition to outlining your vision and mission, in this section you need to focus on your ‘functionallevel’ strategies that is, outline the proposed role of the key functional departments in providing
support to achieve the company’s goals.
When doing your SWOT Analysis, bear in mind that Strengths and Weakness must be based on ONLY
the three (3) factors in the Internal business environment – Management, Employees & Corporate
Culture. The existing and potential Opportunities and Threats must be based on ONLY on those
factors in the External (Task & General) business environment.

Exercise C (3%): In Session 6, you will be required to use the concepts in chapter 10 and other relevant
supplementary material, to outline your company’s Organizing details [18 Marks], which must contain
the following information:

Describe two (2) ways in which “Organising” enhances organisational performance.

Outline the type of span of management (narrow or wide), and justify your answer – 4 Mk
Provide a sample of a suitable Organisational Chart and briefly describe your chosen
Organisational structure – 5 Mk.
Identify and describe your chosen Legal Structure of the venture (i.e. sole proprietorship,
partnership or corporation) – 2 Mk
Justify your choice of Legal Structure by clearly outlining (2) Advantages and (2) Disadvantages
as well as how you will mitigate against its disadvantages – 5 Mk.

Your paper will be marked also on the Professionalism of Written Presentation (2%). You will be
assessed out of 12 Marks using the following criteria:

Compliance with MLA requirements (4 marks).
Neat, professional document (2 marks).
Written expression i.e. clear and logical sequencing of ideas as well correct spelling, grammar
and punctuation (6 marks).
Guidelines for Professionalism of Written Presentations are as follows:
1. You need to spell- and grammar-check your document using UK English, and ensure that all
your summaries are formatted properly. Start each summary on a new page.
2. All summaries should have a title as per the description of each exercise, and sub-titles should
be included as necessary. Use title case for all headings, sub-headings and titles e.g.
Managerial Planning and Goal-setting/Strategy Formulation and Implementation.
3. Do not use contracted words, for example, “don’t” or “it’s.”
4. Your comprehensive summaries (unless otherwise stipulated) must be completed using the MLA
(Modern Language Association) style. You must credit your sources of information. In MLA,
you must include a 'Works Cited' page as well as do in-text citations. Visit the Purdue website
and check how to correctly include in-text citations for various sources in MLA format. Examples
for the general format of MLA research papers, intext citation, endnotes/footnotes, and the Works
cited page can be obtained at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/1/ or MLA
handbook for Writers of Research Papers (7th ed.) and the MLA Style Manual and Guide to
Scholarly Publishing (3rd ed.) which are available in the Library. Additionally, you may use the
BibMe website (http://www.bibme.org/ ) to format your Works Cited page.
5. Even though MLA requires the use of Times New Roman, you are to use either Calibri or Arial
11-point font. Your project must be double-spaced.
6. You must include a ‘Cover Page’ and the names and Student ID numbers for all members
must be included.
7. Your 'Table of Contents' must include page numbers and be properly formatted.
8. Deliverable 1 should be 7-10 pages long, including the Cover page and Works Cited.

Deliverable 2 – Comprehensive Summaries of Exercises D-G (10%)
In Session 11, you will be required to get into your groups in order to finalise the documentation of the
in-class group exercises. Please pay attention to the requirements outlined for each exercise and the
number of marks that are assigned to each exercise. In Session 11, in addition completing
Exercise G, you will be required to get into your groups in order to finalise the documentation of the
in-class group exercises done in sessions 5 and 6. Please pay attention to the number of marks
that are assigned to each exercise.
Exercise D (2%): In Session 8, you will be required to use the concepts in chapter 15 and other relevant
supplementary material, to outline your company’s plans for Leading [12 Marks], which must contain
the following information:

Define Leading and briefly explain the importance of the Leadership Role in YOUR business –
3 Mk
Name and describe (4) key leadership styles and identify which (1) style should be
adopted by leaders in YOUR organization. Give two (2) reasons to support your answer –
9 Mk

Exercise E (2%): In Session 9, you will be required to use the concepts in chapter 16 and other relevant
supplementary material, to outline your company’s Motivation strategies [12 Marks], which must

Name and describe (3) Motivational strategies which can be used in organisations and identify
which (1) strategy could be effective in YOUR organization. Give two (2) reasons to support your

State whether your communication networks would be centralised or decentralised, and justify

Exercise G (2%): You will be required to use the concepts in chapter 19 and 5 and other relevant
supplementary material, to outline what control measures your company plans to utilise to promote
Quality and Performance [12 Marks], which must contain the following information:

Explain the importance of organisational control - in your answer you must apply the
Feedback Control Process to (1) aspect of your business (you may include the
diagram from the text) – 6 Mk
Explicitly state the Philosophy that will guide your approach to controlling – Hierarchical or
Decentralised Control, and justify your answer – 3 Mk
Articulate the Company’s Code of Ethics (for an existing company, you must research and
provide a detailed, appropriate Code of Ethics; for a NEW company, you must develop and
present 5-6 components of a relevant Code of Ethics) – 3 Mk

documents, Comprehensive Summaries of Exercises A-C (10%) and Comprehensive Summaries
of Exercises D-G (10%) to the Assignment tab of Canvas as well as your group’s completed Peer
Evaluation Form, inclusive of a detailed breakdown of what each group member contributed to
the group process and written document (one each for A-C and D-G). Given the size of the files to
be uploaded, you may need to use the ‘SharePoint’ or ‘One Drive’ App, which is accessible via your
ROYTEC email account. Please note that a copy of your group’s PE Form & Report is to be posted in
your group’s assigned FoM Gp Channel in Teams. Additionally, all group members are expected to
participate and contribute meaningfully to both the written and oral components of both team
documents.

ASYNCHRONOUS VIDEO PRESENTATION OF GROUP PROJECT EXERCISES (A-G)
You are required to present the information from your comprehensive summaries of Group Exercises
A-C and D-G in a video presentation. As a team, you would need to collaborate to create a fluid
prerecorded video presentation in the form of a PowerPoint presentation with each member’s
audiovisual presentation being embedded in the relevant slide(s).
The assignment will account for ten percent (10%) of your final course mark. You will be evaluated out
of 60 Marks using the following criteria:

Effective Use of PowerPoint Presentation & Presentation Aids (15 Mk)
Creativity seen in PwP/Presentation Aids (10 Mk)
Content - material selection, thoroughness, relevance and accuracy of information (15 Mk)
Effective Oral Delivery of Content including Communication Skills such as eye contact (13 Mk)
Fluency and Professionalism of Presentation (7 Mk)
By the start of Session 12, one (1) of your group members is required to upload your group’s PPT to
the Assignment tab of Canvas as well as your group’s completed Peer Evaluation Form, inclusive of a
detailed breakdown of what each group member contributed to the group process and written
document. (Given the size of the files to be uploaded, you may need to use the ‘SharePoint’ or ‘One
Drive’ App, which is accessible via your ROYTEC email account.) Please note that a copy of your
group’s PE Form & Report is to be posted in your group’s assigned FoM Gp Channel in Teams.
Additionally, all group members are expected to participate and contribute meaningfully to both the
written and oral components of the presentation.
