These task sheets will help the students focus on the competencies he/she will be assessed. Students will send the output either in printed or digital format as well. The teacher will use the performance criteria checklist to assess the students. 2. Performance Criteria Checklist After doing the activities (drills, writing sessions, etch) and enabling the students to master the required competencies, they are expected to create an authentic output with components stated in the Performance Criteria Checklist. Assessment of outputs for each learning area is on a Yes or No basis in the Performance Criteria Checklist because the initial submission of students warrants a feedback on areas for improvement. Teachers are expected to give feedback and comments after each output submission for the student to improve his/her work. This process must be documented using the Performance Criteria Checklist and the Progress Sheet. Identify issues and ideas for research in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences. 2. Choose and focus on a topic for research. 3. Generate questions and answers relative to the chosen research topic through brainstorming. Introduction In this information sheet, you will learn how to choose a researchable topic by asking the right questions and brainstorming. Research is like problem-solving. As a student of Humanities and Social Sciences, finding a topic involves looking at the problems or issues in your community related to this field. These issues may include but are not limited to relationships, education, values and traditions, psychology, political views, religion, gender, poverty, family, etc. Characteristics of a Good Research Topic 1. It should be specific. This means that your topic is narrowed down and does not encompass many aspects to be answered. 2. It should be something you are curious about. If you are interested in your topic, you will find it easy to generate questions and ideas on how to get information or data. 3. It should be manageable. You also need to think if you have enough resources such as time, money and participants for your study. 4. It should be significant. Your topic must have some usefulness or implications to the society. It may offer a solution, an understanding or even a discovery of information. 5. It should NOT be something that has already been answered or researched over and over. 6. It should have available resources that could support your study. If you cannot find a related literature on your chosen topic, drop it. You are not going anywhere with it. Your study should also fill a research gap which you will find by reading published literature. A brainstorming activity can ensure that your topic has these characteristics. In brainstorming, you can ask as many questions as you can that are related to your topic. Answering these questions will help you arrive at a good and researchable topic. Sample Brainstorming Let us pretend that Student A has chosen this topic: Absenteeism in school 1.1. Whose absenteeism? 2.1. . Why am I curious about it? 1.2. Where specifically? 1. Is the topic specific enough? 2.2What do I want to know? 5. Has the topic been researched over and over? 2. Am I curious about it? Absenteeism 4. What is the significance of this topic? Why is it important? 3. Is it manageable? 6. Do I have enough related literature about this topic? Is there a research gap? 3.a. How do I gather information? 3.b. How much time and money do I have to finish the study? In the graphic organizer above, we have asked questions that come to mind. When asking questions, remember to use the WHs questions (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How). You may have main or broad questions where other questions may arise, just like in question No.1, No. 2 and No. 3. Can you ask questions that are not in the sample? Yes, definitely! Brainstorming helps us visualize the flow of our thoughts. When you do this on your own, you may be able to generate more questions than this sample. That is good. More questions, more ideas. Since our goal is to find a good research topic, it is also important to remember that in asking questions, we need to consider the characteristics of a good research topic discussed in the information sheet. If you will look at the sample brainstorming, the questions considered those characteristics. Look at questions No.1, No.2, and No. 3. You will notice that questions branch out from the main question. In question No. 1 (Is the topic specific enough?), the answer is ‘No’ because absenteeism is a broad topic. So we asked, “Whose absenteeism?” Is it the teachers or students? Another question is, “Absenteeism where?” Is it at school or at work? In question No.2, we asked, “Am I curious about the topic?” The answer is “yes” so we asked, “Why am I curious about it?’ and “What do I want to know?” DEPEDBATS-ODS-F-009/R0/03-02-2020 Address: Provincial Sports Complex, Bolbok, 4200 Batangas City (043)722-1840 / 722-1796 / 722-1437 / 722-2675 / 722-1662 deped.batangas@deped.gov.ph www.depedbatangas.org CRN 44 100 18 93 0045 Republic of the Philippines Department of Education REGION IV-A CALABARZON SCHOOLS DIVISION OF BATANGAS These sample questions show you that you as a researcher should keep asking questions until there is nothing more that you want to know. Part of the brainstorming activity is answering your questions. Study the table below and its discussion. Figure 2. Table of Summary of Brainstorming ABSENTEEISM Answers No Students Name of School Yes I want to discover/understand the reasons behind students’ absenteeism in school. 2.2.Who will be my participants 20-30 grade 12 students 3 .Is it manageable? Yes 3.1. How much time do I have to finish the 4 months study? 3.2.How do I gather information? Survey, interview, recorder 4.What is the significance of the topic? It will help us discover the reasons behind absenteeism and provide a solution to the problem. 5.Has the topic been researched over and over? No 6.Do I have enough related literature? Yes 6.1.How many related literature did I find? 3-5 scholarly work Possible Questions 1.Is the topic specific enough? 1.1.Whose absenteeism? 1.2.Where specifically? 2.Am I curious about it? 2.1.What do I want to know? Discussion 1. Is the topic specific enough? We can still narrow it down since it is a bit generalized and vague or unclear. That is why we asked follow-up questions like: Whose absenteeism? Teachers or students? Then we decided we want to use “students”. Where specifically? Is it from your school, all schools in a district, or all schools in the province? We narrowed it down to a specific school’s name. Making your topic more specific helps you focus as a researcher. Focus helps you become more organized and helps you gather information faster and easier. Ex. Absenteeism of students in (name of school) 2. Is it something you are curious about? If your answer is yes, then you are on the right track. Why are you curious about it? So you ask: DEPEDBATS-ODS-F-009/R0/03-02-2020 Address: Provincial Sports Complex, Bolbok, 4200 Batangas City (043)722-1840 / 722-1796 / 722-1437 / 722-2675 / 722-1662 deped.batangas@deped.gov.ph www.depedbatangas.org CRN 44 100 18 93 0045 Republic of the Philippines Department of Education REGION IV-A CALABARZON SCHOOLS DIVISION OF BATANGAS 3. 4. 5. 6. What do I want to know about this topic? I want to discover/understand the reasons behind students’ absenteeism in school. Curiosity must come with a genuine interest for answers to this question. Without this, your study becomes laborious, irrelevant and not fun. But when you have genuine interest in your topic, you work hard, and become persistent and enthusiastic finding out answers. Is it manageable? For this particular research, because you just use a survey or/interview which can be gathered quickly, 1 semester or 4-5 months is safe and achievable. Normally, 20-30 participants will be sufficient. In gathering information, survey and interview will not cost you much. Pen, paper, or tape recorder may be used. What is significant about this topic? Why is it important? “It will help us discover the reasons behind absenteeism and provide a solution to the problem.” The significance of your topic must show how the findings of your research will impact or affect individuals, community and even nation. Has the topic been researched over and over? It is less likely that it has been done before because you are doing it in the context of your school. If your study has been researched many times, it is important to find if there is a research gap or a question that has not been answered by previous studies. This makes your study worthy. .Do you have enough related literature to support your study? You may search the topic on the internet. If you see several research articles about the topic, then you have related literature to support your study.
