Name _________________________________ Class ______________ Date ________________ GLOBAL WIND PATTERNS Label the diagram of the global winds. Follow the instructions below. 1. Write on the small boxes around the globe N, E, W, S directions. 2. Write on the bigger boxes inside the globe the latitudes of calm areas: doldrum and horse latitude. 3. Write on the small lines outside the degree angles of the area on the globe: 00, 300, 600, 900 4. Write next to the arrows the name of the global wind belts where it is pointing: polar easterlies, trade winds, prevailing westerlies. 5. Then color the arrows of the different global wind patterns accordingly: polar easterlies (blue), trade winds, (red), prevailing westerlies (green) THINGS TO REMEMBER - winds from 90o always go down, from 30o rise up and drops - polar easterlies are winds near the poles and come from the east - horse latitude has calm air because dry air sink here from the upper atmosphere creating a windless zone, this is where deserts are usually found. The sinking air flows north and south (rise up and drops) when it reaches the surface. - doldrum has calm air because the direct sun’s heat makes the air rise straight up rather than horizontal - westerlies are winds coming from the west - trade winds are winds towards the equator and blowing east, they are also called tropical easterlies
