Through the activity, we learned more about the roles that various parts of a
business play. We also had the chance to discuss these roles in small groups.
We were divided into 6 groups and were asked to imagine that we are a group
of entrepreneurs looking forward to opening an app company, I was assigned to
the operations team. The activity was designed to help us students better
understand how businesses functions, and writing this assignment allowed us to
reflect on what we had done and get a deeper understanding of the subject.
Any firm, regardless of size, needs an operations team to keep everything
running properly. At first, I didn't understand what does an operating team
actually do in a business and I was confused until during the exercise when we
discussed how an operating team operates it operates through selecting the most
suitable and effective servers, organizing services, and handling all operational
aspects. After that discussion I understood more about this business function
and started to contribute more in the talk with my ideas and thoughts. It was
also brought to my attention during the discussion that we needed other teams to
function and that we couldn't make any decisions by ourselves, it is similar to a
body lacking an organ.
One of the issues we ran into was in production efficiency because we didn't
know the budget for the equipment the company required and decide whether
the app will be for android users or apple users or maybe both. We solved this
by brainstorming and coming up with ideas like asking the finance team for the
information we needed about the budget of the company and heading to the
marketing team to ask about targeted costumers and their market research so we
could make decisions, which highlights how one function cannot function by
itself and needs the cooperation of other functions
While discussing how we could have good quality control as an app
company and its crucial to have a good server that could handle all loads and
run smoothly, I suggested that we needed to research and buy the most efficient
Servers and do regular updates and tests so we could optimize our app and
satisfy customers. However, we needed the technical team through their skills
and knowledge in this field to know which servers would be more suitable and
carry on with the regulatory quality checks
A concept that I learned through this activity is dependability just like how
all business functions need each other to make the company work, we also as a
society need each other to live in peace and harmony and a person can't just live
alone or work alone we all need each other to function just like how a student
needs a teacher and a sick person needs a doctor.
If in a company a department decided to make decisions on its own without
returning to other departments this could cause big problems and loses this
usually indicates that the organization culture of this firm is weak. Like if a
manager in operation buys equipment without informing the finance department
so they could assign a budget this would lead to a lot of losses.
To sum up everything that has been stated too far, this activity significantly
enhanced my understanding of business departments and gave me an insight
into how businesses work .even though I now understand business functions
better I still lack knowledge on the topic and as a next step I'm looking forward
to learn more about them .
