Chapter 7 “Benny Greep”
1. Describe Benny’s apartment
The apartment was very small. There was one main room which was used as living room,
dining room and bedroom. The room had two doors one of the doors led into the kitchen and
the other into the bathroom. The main room was untidy. There were dirty plates and glasses
and there was a full ash tray lying on the floor. The kitchen was also dirty and untidy.
2. How did Samuel find Benny Greep in his flat?
Benny Greep was in the bath. His left hand was hanging over the side of the bath. It had cut
nails and a gold ring on one finger. His head was out of water. He had handsome face and long
black hair. His eyes were wide open. His feet were out of water, he had his shoes and socks on.
The bath water was red. he had been shot in the chest and then pushed into the bath.
3. What did Samuel find in the main room of Benny’s flat?
He found the dead man’s coat lying on the chair. He felt in the pockets and found a few dollars
and a driving license and it has a photograph of the dead man on it. The address in the license
was 5314 Arvieda Street west Los Angeles.
4. “If you come back tonight at ten o’clock, you’ll find Benny Greep here.” Comment
The cleaner at Las Cabanas said this to Lenny Samuel when he asked him where he could find
Benny Greep. He told him to come at ten o’clock to find him as he plays the drums in the band
so he gave him five dollars to tell him where he is now. So, the man wrote his address on a
piece of paper from the floor.
Chapter 8 “ Arrested for Murder”
5. “There is a dead man in the bath” comment
Lenny picked up the telephone and asked for the police and told him that there was a dead
man in the bath in apartment 507,5314 Arivieda street. The policeman at the other end of the
telephone asked him not to touch anything and stay where he was as a police car will be there
in a few minutes.
6. “Why did you kill your friend in the bath?” comment
The young policeman asked this to Lenny Samuel at Benny Greep’s apartment. told him that he
wasn’t his friend but he was a private detective who came here to talk to Benny and as the
door was open, he came in and found Benny dead in the bath so he telephoned the police.
7. Why wasn’t Samuel angry as he was arrested by the police?
He wasn’t angry as he was arrested by the police for the murder because he got used to this
because he was a private detective. It happened all the time.
