Bicol University : A University for Humanity
Bicol University has been firm in its mission and vision throughout these
years, and I believe that it cannot be achieved without the cooperation of each and
every student. For me, as a 2nd-year civil engineering student at this university, I am
aware that now that I am still studying, I can only do limited things to help this
university attain its mission and vision, but this does not mean that this doesn’t have
any impact at all. Simple habits of coming to class and being on time with the
schedule are a manifestation of how Bueños practice productive scholarship. This act
reflects how we are dedicated to utilizing this right to free education to enhance our
knowledge and open our minds to new learning. Another thing that I can do is
absorb, not just memorize, what our professors and instructors have instilled in us.
Having this aim of applying my learnings to real-world dilemmas and not just aiming
for academic recognition but just for the sake of taking the course is something that I
can contribute to my university to achieve its mission and vision. If we cannot see
change, then might as well be the change. That is something that I have learned from
being part of this institution. Personally, I believe that leadership is not just about a
person leading a group of people. Anyone can play the role of a transformative leader
without having the position. I know that I am helping my university achieve its vision
of transformative leadership by being a good example to others and leading them to
the right path. This just means that by motivating my peers to spend their free time
studying instead of wasting it doing unproductive things, I am directing them to fully
realize their potential. I chose a degree program that is academically challenging,
which is civil engineering, and there are times that we are just barely surviving. We
encounter scores that are definitely below the passing rate, we solve problems and
end up asking why this problem was created in the first place, and then we break
down from the stress of every semester, and yet we are still here. We find ourselves
still going to class despite the fears and setbacks. At the end of the day, we still want
"Engr.” placed before our names, and that, for me, reflects the kind of character that
this university is aiming for in its vision. Having a strong heart and mind to face every
circumstance that is given to us is a Bueño spirit. As I have said, we can only do so
much as we are still students. In the future, I envision fulfilling the vision of the
university of "collaborative service” by utilizing what I have learned in this institution
and using it in my profession to serve the country and the people. As a future civil
engineer, I want to carry the name of this university whenever I create a construction
project that will benefit the community. Of course, the mission and vision are just
mere words if we do not put them into action, and nothing is achieved through words.
It needs a manifestation of action from each and every part of this institution, and it
can start with the simple habits of each of us, Buenos, that will reflect in the image of
Bicol University as a whole.
