What is Food Technology?
Food technology applies science and related
fields of study to convert raw materials into
safe, stable, palatable and nutritious food. It
includes food safety and quality from postharvest handling, preparation, processing,
packaging, storage and distribution of food to
ensure food and nutrition security, safety and
well-being of individuals, families and
communities. It also considers the social,
cultural, economic, managerial and
entrepreneurial, and environmental aspects of
food systems, as well as the art of food
preparation.
What are the Program Goals of
Food Technology?
The program is a mix of pure and applied
science, engineering, business and
entrepreneurial skills. It aims to produce
professionals who have the capacity to apply
the science and technology and related fields
of study in post-harvest handling, preparation,
processing, packaging, storage, distribution
and marketing of food to ensure food nutrition
and security, safety, quality and environmental
sustainability.
What competencies are needed
in BS Food Technology Program?
To be accepted into the program, applicants
must have a BUCET rating of at least
86%, should have completed a high
school course on the fundamentals
of chemistry, biology,
mathematics, and have a
genuine passion for food
technolgy.
