1. Smart Solution for an Island Destination
1.1 Background
Tourism is livelihoods of islands. It has become the main economic activity for many islands around the world, creating much needed job opportunities and
bringing in important income and foreign exchange earnings. Their special geographical situation and their immense natural and cultural richness makes
islands unique for visitors, but at the same time, confronts them with a number of challenges and vulnerabilities exacerbated also by the devasting effects
and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, investing in sustainable tourism in islands is the only path to ensure that the sector continues to
advance socio-economic welfare while protecting their fragile ecosystems.
1.2 The Challenge
You are an entrepreneur or stakeholder operating in an Island destination.
What is your answer and smart solution to the complex challenges island destinations are facing?
•
Via a Pitch you will convince a Destination Management Organisation (DMO) that your solution is the best way towards the future of Island
Destinations. (presentation - 30%)
•
In a Report you will describe the different parts of your destination, including stakeholders and give the best solution chosen of your and explain
why based on People, Planet, Profit (report – 70%)
2. The Pitch
On Friday you will each pitch individually a Smart Solution to a challenge of a chosen island destinations. For this case you are a stakeholder in the tourism
destination of your choice. This can be a tour operator, hotel owner, restaurant owner, a NGO or any other entrepreneur.
From your point of view you will come up with a Smart solution, which you will pitch for the Destination Management Organization.
The pitch will be 2 minutes long and individually presented.
A workshop “Elevator Pitch” will be given to educate you how to prepare & preform a Pitch.
The assessor will fulfill the role of the DMO and decides if your Pitch has potential (pass). After this you will continue with the Report.
3. The report – Step by Step
Your report should meet the following criteria:

The report contains a title page (including course name & number, student name & number), a table of content, and page numbers with a clear
structure of the report.
The textual quality and the level of English within the report is acceptable.
The APA standards are correctly applied for in-text citations and the reference list.
Complete Report: All chapters (introduction, chapter 1 - 6 and obligatory appendices)
Chapter 1: Introduction
Paragraph 1.1 (Group) This is an introduction paragraph in which you explain what a tourism destination is and the impact of tourism on a destination.
Explain what destination management means and describe the role of tourism organizations in destination management. Explain why good destination
management on island destinations is even more important. This paragraph should have between 300 - 350 words.
Paragraph 1.2 (Individual) Introduce the island of your choice by providing a detailed description of the destination in which you will operate as
entrepreneur or stakeholder. Describe the destination, the amount and type of visitors, what it is famous for, the culture and nature. This paragraph should
have around 150- 200 words.

Chapter 2: The components of tourism
(Group) Explain the components of the tourism industry.
(Individual) which specific components can you find in your chosen island/coastal destination. How relevant are each of them. (I) Which
stakeholder/entrepreneur do you represent? Describe the vision, mission, and target group of your company as detailed as possible.

Chapter 3: Stakeholders and the role of DMO
(Group) Identify the role of key stakeholders and their interconnectedness in blue destination development and explain the role of DMO’s in the destination
(use APA and relevant sources).
(Individual) Which stakeholders can you identify for your business? Create a figure which shows your company and the relevant stakeholders which are
involved in your business (be aware that new stakeholder can be added while you work on this report and your solution/product). Describe how the
stakeholders are connected to your company (as supply chain/buyer or anything else). Create a mind map with all your stakeholders (part 1) and add this to
your annex
Show the outcome of the case study assignment (key stakeholders of Chako in the island Zanzibar) made during the lecture as sample of a potential
solution for the challenge the island Zanzibar is facing in your appendix.

Chapter 4: Challenges and possible solutions
(Group) Discuss typical developments and problems in tourism (island) destinations. Use a minimum of 3 sources (academic literature/articles) you refer to
in your report. Take into account the economic, environmental and social impacts on destinations caused by tourism. Which are opportunities for coastal
and marine tourism.
(Individual) Create a swot analyses for your chosen destination: describe the positive effects of tourism, the negative effects, the threats and opportunities.
challenges and possible solutions for your chosen island destination. Write for each category a minimum of 5 factors.

Chapter 5: The solution
In this chapter you formulate your final solution for the challenge.
Paragraph 5.1: the solution
In chapter 1-3 you have described the situation, the stakeholders, the challenges and possible solutions. Now it is time to choose the best solution out of
the a minimum of 5 opportunities (solutions) you created in chapter 4. You describe why you have chosen for this solution.
Paragraph 5.2: Stakeholders
Who do you need to come to this Smart Solution? Why do you need them? What are their responsibilities in the project? Create a mind map with all the
stakeholders you need for this solution (part 2) and add this to your annex
Paragraph 5.3: Own role
What is your own role (as company) in this Smart Solution?
In your annex you add your (updated) pitch

Chapter 6: Reflection
Paragraph 6.1 The best solution (Group)
With your group mates you discuss each individual chosen solution and how it fits best in their chosen destination. Discuss in your group which solution
(presented in the pitch) you find best. Explain why this solution is chosen as best solution/project plan for sustainable development of a coastal destination.
Discuss how does this idea benefit to the People/Profit/Planet side of the island destination? Make sure all (4) solutions (pitches) of your group mates can
be found in the appendix and refer to these in your report.
