Course Introduction Weapons Overview DTE Lesson 1 Naval Weapon Systems Course Objectives • Understand the principles behind the types and phases of Naval weapons employment • Know the sensors and weapon armament of US Navy ships and aircraft • Understand the inherent problems in weapons employment posed by technology advances and dynamic environments • Apply knowledge of weapon and sensors to viable tactical employment of US Naval platforms Today’s objecTives • • Understand the distinction between a weapon and a weapon system and comprehend the “general” requirements of a weapon system. Know the steps of the detect-to-engage sequence and the constituents of a weapon system that are involved in each step. (i.e. - RADAR) • Components that DIRECT or aim a delivery unit. (i.e. - tracking system) • Components that DELIVER or initiate delivery of the weapon to the target. (i.e. - launching system) • Components that DESTROY the target when in contact with or near it. (i.e. - missile/warhead) Fire Control Problem • Three distinct phases: • Detection • Tracking • Engagement Detect to Engage Detection Detect Localize Classify Detect to Engage Tracking Detect Localize Classify Track Detect to Engage Neutralize Engagement Detect Localize Classify Weapon Selection Track DETECT TARGET ENVIRONMENT NOISE DETECT TARGET ENVIRONMENT NOISE LOCALIZE SPEED BEARING ELEVATION RANGE DEPTH DETECT TARGET ENVIRONMENT NOISE LOCALIZE SPEED BEARING ELEVATION RANGE DEPTH CLASSIFY NUMBER SIZE ID TYPE DETECT TARGET ENVIRONMENT NOISE LOCALIZE SPEED BEARING ELEVATION RANGE DEPTH CLASSIFY NUMBER SIZE ID TYPE TRACK GENERATE CONTINUOUS TARGET DATA DETECT TARGET ENVIRONMENT NOISE FEEDBACK LOCALIZE TRACK SPEED BEARING ELEVATION RANGE DEPTH CLASSIFY NUMBER SIZE ID TYPE GENERATE CONTINUOUS TARGET DATA DETECT TARGET ENVIRONMENT NOISE LOCALIZE SPEED BEARING ELEVATION RANGE DEPTH CLASSIFY NUMBER SIZE ID TYPE GENERATE CONTINUOUS TARGET DATA FIRE CTRL SOL’N TRACK GENERATE CONTINUOUS TARGET DATA DETECT TARGET ENVIRONMENT NOISE LOCALIZE SPEED BEARING ELEVATION RANGE DEPTH SELECT CLASSIFY LAUNCHING PROPULSION GUIDANCE CTRL WPN GENERATE CONTINUOUS TARGET DATA NUMBER SIZE ID TYPE FIRE CTRL SOL’N TRACK GENERATE CONTINUOUS TARGET DATA DETECT TARGET ENVIRONMENT NOISE NEUTRALIZE LOCALIZE SPEED BEARING ELEVATION RANGE DEPTH FUZING WARHEAD EFFECTS SELECT CLASSIFY LAUNCHING PROPULSION GUIDANCE CTRL WPN GENERATE CONTINUOUS TARGET DATA NUMBER SIZE ID TYPE FIRE CTRL SOL’N TRACK GENERATE CONTINUOUS TARGET DATA BDA DETECT TARGET ENVIRONMENT NOISE NEUTRALIZE LOCALIZE SPEED BEARING ELEVATION RANGE DEPTH FUZING WARHEAD EFFECTS SELECT CLASSIFY LAUNCHING PROPULSION GUIDANCE CTRL WPN GENERATE CONTINUOUS TARGET DATA NUMBER SIZE ID TYPE FIRE CTRL SOL’N TRACK GENERATE CONTINUOUS TARGET DATA Questions?
