Title: "Learning Photography and English from the First Lady's Instagram"
For Apple or Android users, the photo-sharing app Instagram needs no introduction.
Eventually, I joined the bandwagon a few months ago, marking my entry into the world of
Instagram, initially created by Kevin Systrom. Notably, one of the accounts I decided to follow
on Instagram is that of Ani Yudhoyono, the wife of the former Indonesian president, Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono.
But why did I choose to follow Ani Yudhoyono's Instagram account? Of course, I had my
reasons for deciding to keep up with the First Lady's Instagram posts. If there were no clear
reasons, why would I bother following her on Instagram—although, truth be told, keeping up
with her photo uploads is not a taxing endeavor. In fact, I gained knowledge from it.
Firstly, Mrs. Yudhoyono's photographic skills are impressive. Not only are the subjects of her
photos captivating, but her photography techniques and angles also offer valuable lessons. At
the very least, this grandmother of two produces photos that are not far from the work of
professional photographers. Her Instagram feed covers a wide range of themes, including the
beauty of nature, cultural diversity, politics, education, and more.
Furthermore, Kristiani Herrawati, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's wife, also known as Ibu Ani,
is almost always seen with a camera whenever she visits various places. It's where she feels
free to snap photos of whatever she finds interesting. As her Instagram follower, I get to know
all the latest photos and videos she uploads.
I've even liked and commented on some of her photos, though Mrs. Ani herself has never
reciprocated by liking or commenting on any of my Instagram posts. I don't expect too much,
especially from such an intelligent and busy woman. I understand that her role as the First Lady
is not primarily about uploading photos to Instagram, let alone liking and commenting on
others' posts.
Imagine if Mrs. Ani, for example, spent her days on Twitter just tweeting and responding to
the thousands of comments she receives. What would the world say? Some might comment,
"Oh, Mrs. Ani seems to have nothing better to do. Does life consist of tweeting and uploading
on Instagram?" Or, "Let her be; that's what an active First Lady is like. Not like you, who's not
even worth following!"
Apart from learning a lot about photography from Mrs. Ani's Instagram posts, what's more
educational for me is that I can learn English from Sarwo Edhie Wibowo's third child. Indeed,
every time she uploads a photo on Instagram, the caption is bilingual, with English following
the Indonesian description.
Reading Mrs. Ani's photo captions in English is an interesting experience for me, and it's
probably something not often done by Indonesians who also have Instagram accounts. So, what
do I gain apart from photography knowledge? Well, at the very least, my English vocabulary
is expanding!
For instance, she uploaded a video 21 hours ago with the caption: "Airlangga gak mau turun
dari gendongan Memo."-Part II. Below it, she wrote: "Airlangga does not want to come down
from Memo’s arms."-Part II.
