ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS
1.
A durable structure must have sufficient resilience and serviceability performance for
intended purpose under working environment for the lifetime of the structure. Based on
a recent report on structure/structural member failure due to lack of durability, list and
briefly describe at least THREE (3) factors that trigger the collapse of the
structure/structural member. Provide the link to the report or attached the report in your
answer (CO2-PO5, 15 marks).

Figure 1 shows a cross-section of a flanged beam designed to sustain a 350 kNm design
moment. With the aid of a stress block, locate the neutral axis of the beam if
characteristic strength of concrete and steel are taken as 30 N/mm 2 and 500 N/mm2,
respectively. Hence, determine the moment of resistance of the beam and give your
comment on the designed section (CO2-PO5, 15 marks).
