Installation
AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Prerequisites (Windows Installer 4.5 and .NET 4.7.2) and third-party installations like
SQL Express 2014, are part of the main installer. A separate pre-requisites installer is not needed.
Custom OTS Engines install AvevaOtsEngines2022 is a separate installer.
AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022 includes Thermo Data Manager (TDM) version 5.0 to allow management of
Pure Component and Binary Interaction Data. The TDM application is supplied as part of the AVEVA Dynamic
Simulation Software installation and is accessed only through the AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software user
interface.
Schema evolution of simulations developed with AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software 5.3.x, 6.0, 6.1, 2021 to
AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022 is supported. Migration of AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software simulations
created with earlier versions (prior to 5.3.x) directly to AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022 is not supported. It is
recommended to upgrade the older versions to 5.3.x versions before migrating to the target version directly.
Models from AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022 cannot migrate to earlier released versions of AVEVA Dynamic
Simulation Software.
SQL server 2014 is an optional install option which is required only for migration of older .s4m to .js4m
migration. JRE (Java Runtime), which used to be installed as a separate component is now prepackaged with the
regular AVEVA Dynamic Simulation install.

IPASSI_LICENSE_FILE environment variable to your system, which in the case of this
example; will be set to FlexNet Security Server.
TOKEN 11.16 TKN
AVEVA LOCAL
These security options allow the use of multiple AVEVA products from a common
license pool of tokens. The terms and availability of this Token license option must first
be established through a separate AVEVA contract. Token licensing requires special
arrangements for regional technical and licensing support.
In addition to the FNP online licensing, where the AVEVA application communicates
with the license server in a real-time manner, AVEVA also offers SECALS licensing.
SECALS security type allows the AVEVA application to obtain the license from an
AVEVA license server that exist either on local machine or on the network.
To use this security type, select SECALS option from the available list of security types
and provide the AVEVA license sever name while installing AVEVA Dynamic
Simulation.
AVEVA LaaS
This security type allows the AVEVA application to obtain the license through the web
from a license server hosted on the AVEVA premise (https://
license.connect.aveva.com).
NOTE: The web distribution package does not include a FlexNet Server security installation. It must be
downloaded separately if you are setting up FlexNet security for the first time.
NOTE: To change the type of security system, use Start->Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Program->
AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022 -> Change option.

Before you begin a new AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software install
1. Ensure that you have administrative rights (Microsoft Windows security) for the machine on which you will
install or un-install AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software.
2. AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software requires Power User or Local Machine Administrator privileges to stop
and restart its services at runtime. Computers with SCP270 Software (CP Image) require Local Machine
Administrator privileges.
3. AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software install testing has been performed on the following 64-bit operating
systems:
• Windows 10 Enterprise (20H2)
• Windows 10 Professional
• Windows 10 Enterprise, Japanese
• Windows 11 Enterprise (21H2)
• Windows Server 2016 Standard
• Windows Server 2019 Standard
Operating systems not explicitly tested may not work properly.
Note: AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022 is not supported on 32-bit Operating Systems.
4. Do not rename a machine with AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software or any application with Microsoft SQL
Server installed. Use the following procedure:
• Back up your work.
• Un-install AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software
• Reboot the machine.
• Rename the machine.
• Re-install AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software.
• Restore your work.
5. Machine names must only include alphanumeric characters (A to Z and 0 to 9). Issues have been reported
for machines with special characters in machine names during installs. Consult your IT administrators to
ensure that your DNS Servers fully support those hostnames. Mixed case or lower-case machine names (a to
z) will, on certain occasions, cause issues with the MS SQL server naming.
6. If you are using FlexNet or TOKEN security, you will need the name of the FlexNet security server or fixed IP
address.
7. USB security hardware keys are no longer supported. For any assistance on USB support, please contact
AVEVA technical support.
8. If you have a firewall installed, it may interfere with the AVEVA Activation Manager and other AVEVA

for essential Windows programs and services only. For more information, refer to Microsoft Knowledge
Base article 875352.
10. Foxboro® I/A Series® processes MUST be disabled and stopped before installing or uninstalling AVEVA
Dynamic Simulation Software on I/A Series systems. If I/A Series processes are running, use the Control Panel
"Foxboro I/A" control to "Disable I/A Series auto login", then reboot I/A Series machine using Start->Run-"fox
shutdown 1 1 1" command and reboot the system before install AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software.
11. Installing AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software while SCP/TRISIM/Dynamic Simulation processes are running
will cause install issues. Before installing AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software:
a. Stop SCP, TRISIM, and AVEVA Dynamic Simulation processes via normal shutdown.
b. Reset the services via the Host Configuration editor.
c. Exit the SCP launcher.
12. Installation of different versions of AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Software may cause the SIM4ME environment
variable to contain multiple paths. Before installing SCP Software, verify that the SIM4ME environment
variable contains a single unique path to the current AVEVA Dynamic Simulation install root (for example,
C:\SIMSCI\DSS63).
13. AVEVA Dynamic Simulation is not compatible with Windows sleep mode. Ensure that sleep mode is turned
off for all workstations hosting AVEVA Dynamic Simulation and any DSS engines.
AVEVA Dynamic Simulation Secure Deployment Guidelines
For maximum security, when installing AVEVA Dynamic Simulation, do the following:
• Do not install SQL Server
• Choose single box install option
• Do not open any external ports in your local firewall.
This will have all AVEVA Dynamic Simulation processes running at the user’s security level without external
connections. The following section provides a detailed instructions on these points.
SQL Server
With AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022, SQL Server is not needed to run AVEVA Dynamic Simulation. SQL Server is
only needed to evolve simulations from AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 5.3.2 and earlier. If you do need to migrate
pre AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 6.0 simulations to AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2021 or later then install SQL
Server on a single machine and use that to migrate all necessary simulations.
Multibox Setup
If multiple machines are needed to run a simulation then the multi-box installation option is necessary. Some
ports will have to be opened in the machine firewalls to let the various machines communicate. For more
information on the minimum number of ports and how to select the specific port numbers, refer to Port Usage in
AVEVA Dynamic Simulation.
Installation Folder
For secure installation, install AVEVA Dynamic Simulation under the OS %Program Files%.
If you choose to install AVEVA Dynamic Simulation to a folder outside of %Program Files% and you wish to make
your installation more secure, ensure that write permission restrictions are applied on the folders where AVEVA

AVEVA™ Dynamic Simulation Release Notes
AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022 Installation
Dynamic Simulation binaries are installed. For example, if you install under C:\simsci\, then change the
permissions of all folders under C:\SimSci\DSS63, (except for C:\SimSci\DSS63\Simulations and
C:\SimSci\DSS63\User), to restrict write privileges only to the Administrators group.
Port Usage in AVEVA Dynamic Simulation
AVEVA Dynamic Simulation potentially uses quite a few IP ports depending on the number of engines in a
simulation. Each executable that functions as a CORBA server uses a unique IP port. This includes the
NamingService, ActivationManager, UtilityServer, SimExecutive, GUI, and each engine. Some large simulations
have more than 50 engines spread across several computers. By default, the NamingService uses port 10153 and
the other processes will use open ports above 50000. Also, the SMB port 445 might be used if a multibox
installation is chosen. It is possible to specify the IP ports used by all the processes, not just the NamingService.
For more information, refer to Setting CORBA IP Port Numbers in AVEVA Dynamic Simulation.
Setting CORBA IP Port Numbers in AVEVA Dynamic Simulation
ActivationManager and UtilityServer
These processes get the relevant arguments from the registry. Under the HKLM\SOFTWARE\SIMSCI\SIM4ME\
{version} folder, there is a string value named NameServiceInfo. This entry needs to be modified.
Commas are used instead of spaces to separate command line arguments. If you want to assign ports 56000 and
56001 to the ActivationManager and UtilityServer, the following update is required:
-ORBListenEndpoints,iiop://:56000/portspan=2
Note: You need to give these processes sequential port numbers. The 56000 is the base IP port and the
portspan=2 argument limits the port choices to 56000 and 56001. If the portspan is not set or portspan is set to
1, then one of the processes would fail on startup due to not finding an open port.

Page 12

AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022 Installation
SimExecutive and Engines
The Config_file.dat in C:\SimSci\DSS63\Servers\system needs to be edited to add the relevant argument. Each
engine type has section in config_file.dat and in these sections will be a startup_params line. For all engine types
the beginning of the line will look like:
startup_params=-ORBInitRef NameService=iioploc://%NSHOST%:%NSPORT%/NameService -ORBSvcConf
"C:\SimSci\DSS63\Servers\bin\Sim4meSVC.conf" -ORBDottedDecimalAddresses 0
the -ORBListenEndpoints argument should be added right after this. For the SimExecutive a single port is
acceptable:
startup_params=-ORBInitRef NameService=iioploc://%NSHOST%:%NSPORT%/NameService -ORBSvcConf
"C:\SimSci\DSS63\Servers\bin\Sim4meSVC.conf" -ORBDottedDecimalAddresses 0
-ORBListenEndpoints iiop://:10160
For each engine type the number of engines needs to be determined so the portspan can be set.
Note: For AVEVA Dynamic Simulation engines you will need two ports per engine. One for the edit engine and
one for the run engine. For a two AVEVA Dynamic Simulation engine simulations, you would set:
startup_params=-ORBInitRef NameService=iioploc://%NSHOST%:%NSPORT%/NameService -ORBSvcConf
"C:\SimSci\DSS63\Servers\bin\Sim4meSVC.conf" -ORBDottedDecimalAddresses 0
-ORBListenEndpoints iiop://:10161/portspan=4

AVEVA™ Dynamic Simulation Release Notes
Summary of Features and Enhancements
• Resolution of temperature crossover issue during a shutdown scenario with integrated energy balance and
Chen's correlation enabled.
• Resolution of reverse flow discrepancy with LM correlations in Tube Pass compared to Simple Conductance
when there is 100% vapor.
• Avoid Shah correlation during vaporization so that shut down scenario is run successfully.
• Correction in Uf calculation in TubePass Shah correlation to avoid fluctuations during MR and NG cutoff with
compressible and incompressible options.
• Resolution of flow fluctuation which should be zero when outlet valves are closed in case of LM correlations.
• Resolution of Plate-Fin exchanger issue of UFCalc not getting updated when vapor is greater than 95%.
Header Enhancement – Advanced Header
The following Header enhancements are introduced in AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022:
• Automatically transition between different algorithms based on process conditions and model state
• Avoid / handle failures without user intervention
• Consistent molar density from mass balance and the flash
• Volume sensitivity robustness during fast transition between phases
• Handle rapid pressure changes
• Handle zero derivative conditions in isolated headers to avoid pressure going beyond lower or higher limit
• Improve stability and accuracy for a small residence time system
• Improve speed by avoiding volume sensitivity calculations at steady state in case if Rigorous + Compressible
and Advanced options
• Remove/reduce the need for user to choose solution option
• Avoid breaking existing systems – current options are hidden in DEW but retained in OEV.
Invariant Co-ordinates for Compressor Performance Map
This feature enhancement allow users to
• Extend the Invariant scaling to surge calculations
• Handle non-monotonic surge curve
• Duplicate speeds in defining the surge curve
• Improve the accuracy of scaling to +/-2% of the literature values
• Extrapolate the speed based on reduced curves
Stream with Embedded Conductance
AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2021 or earlier version architecture does not allow directly connecting two pressure
nodes with a stream. In P&IDs, two vessels (pressure nodes) may often be connected, with no physical
equipment in between. Users/migration tools are required to add non-existing flow devices (typically valves or
pipes) in the simulation.

Page 18
AVEVA™ Dynamic Simulation Release Notes
Summary of Features and Enhancements
The new feature allows intelligent P&IDs to get imported into AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022 using a model
generation tool. Using this feature, when a user connects two pressure nodes and enables the flow calculation
option, an embedded conductance sub-model is created within the stream model.
Thermodynamics Enhancements
Open Form VLLE and Super linear local flash
Existing VLLE Flash algorithm, i.e., NO TIER, has a few limitations such as failing to predict L1/L2 phase for some
flash conditions. Robustness issues are also seen with the traditional local flash (LF) when the component slate
contains more than 60 components.
To overcome the limitations,
• An alternate VLLE flash algorithm called “Open Form” is implemented.
• A method called Tangent Plane Distance Analysis (TPDA) is implemented for helping to predict missing liquid
phases(L1/L2) more accurately than NO TIER with LF.
• Super Linear Local Flash (SPLF) approach is introduced to solve the crash issue and also it can handle VLLE
with much larger component counts (150+) without any memory issue.
• From performance point of view, both need rigorous update, but SPLF requires less properties update during
rigorous update, hence would be faster in principle.
• NO TIER-RTSPLF algorithm is more robust in any of the OTS projects and do not encounter any convergence
issues or NAN values.
Simplified Flash Option Configuration
Flash algorithm parameters for different InternalPhases options are available to execute flash in various
operating conditions using particular algorithm as shown below:
• VLE Flash algorithm (0 – No Tier, 1 – Tier2, 2-Open Form)
• VLLE Flash algorithm (0 – No Tier, 2-Open Form)
• FREE_WATER/DECANT Flash algorithm (0 – No Tier, 2-Open Form)
User can set the above parameters per engine basis using the Engine Configuration option.

Known Issues
Message pop up while opening BulkConfigurator file
If you encounter the following error message, install VSTO assembly manually by double clicking
DSS.BulkConfigurator.vsto located at "C:\SIMSCI\DSS63\BulkConfigurator\bin".
If it fails to install, remove the "2.0" folder from C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Apps folder and repeat
the previous step.
UOM issues upon migration with ElecSolve models.
Models created in or migrated to 5.3/5.3HF OR V_DES parameter values adjusted manually in 5.3 will have a
problem on migration to AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022. Solution is to use the AVEVA Dynamic Simulation
search tool to find entries of V_DES in the database. Inspect and correct the values manually (typically by a factor
of 1000) to match the 5.2.1 values. Migration from DYNSIM 5.2.1 or previous versions to AVEVA Dynamic
Simulation 2022 will not show this issue.
Float Point Errors during load or runtime
With the introduction of checks to eliminate "divide by zero" error, float point error warning messages might be
reported for some of the miscellaneous equations during load or during runtime in the message monitor. These
warnings do not have any impact on performance but might lead to deviation in steady-state values. In such
equations, add protection to the denominator to avoid division by zero. For example, to avoid zero Y values in
the equation X/Y, modify equation as X/(IF Y ==0, 0.001, Y).

Known Issues
Windows Look and Feel
The look and feel for object faceplates, sliders and others may not be the same in various Windows OS. It will not
have any impact on functionality. Consider changing theme or personalization to make it consistent with other
Operating Systems.
Pipe fitting calculations with exit effect
In DYNSIM 5.3.2, calculations for pipe fitting (K) has been modified. Exit effect value entered was taken as L/D
and corresponding "K" was calculated as K=f*(L/D). With modified calculations, exit effect value will be taken as
K. There might be a deviation in steady-state values for simulation having a pipe with exit effect upon migration
of simulations using versions prior to 5.3.2.
Flash statistics window response
In DYNSIM versions before 6.1, a slowdown was observed with value refresh in the Flash statistics window. This
issue has been addressed in AVEVA Dynamic Simulation 2022 by refreshing only the visible parameter values due
to which, while switching between internal tabs (performance, results, configuration) scroll bar will move to the
first flash instead of the selected flash. Also, scrolling the window will refresh the values gradually.
