SCIENCE LESSON PLAN GRADE LEVEL 9 QUARTER 2 MODULE 6 DATE 11- 9- 2023 DAILY LESSON PLAN I.OJECTIVES A. Content Standard B. Performance Standard C. Learning Competencies/ Write the LC code The learners demonstrate understanding of how changes in the environment may affect species extinction. Make a multimedia presentation of a timeline of extinction of representative microorganisms, plants, and animals. Relate a species extinction to the failure of population of organisms to adapt to abrupt changes in the environment. (S9LT-lef-30) OBJECTIVES II. CONTENT III. LEARNING RESOURCES At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to attain 80% proficiency level to : a.) Find out how changes in the environment can affect species extinction. b.) Distinguish environmental changes that may result in the loss of the species. c.) Relate species extinction to the failure of populations of organisms to adapt to abrupt changes in the environment. Biodiversity and Evolution: Causes of Species Extinction A. References/ Textbooks/ Manual Science 9 Quarter 2- Module 6 YouTube University: B. Instructional Material Laptop, Projector, PowerPoint Presentation, Activity Sheets C. Strategies Oral recitation, Collaborative learning, Cooperative learning D. Integration of content within and across the curriculum 1) English - Analyze the impact of species extinction on the environment through persuasive writing. 2) Social Studies - Investigate how human activities contribute to species extinction and its effects on ecosystems. 3) Math - Use statistical data to analyze the decline in population of endangered species. V. PROCEDURES PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES A. ELICIT ( 5 minutes ) Reviewing the previous lesson or presenting the new lesson TEACHERS ACTIVITY •Prayer – Ask one student to lead the prayer. Checking tidiness of the learning area, ask students to pick up pieces of paper found on the premises. • Words of Welcome •Checking of Attendance, ask the beadle to list the absentees and hand it after the class. •Class Rules 1. No using of cell phones during class. 2. Listen when someone is talking. 3. Raise your right hand if you want to answer or you have questions. 4. Be cooperative with our activities. 5. Respect other’s opinion. 6. No Shouting! Review To activate learners prior knowledge, they will match images of an endemic species in the Philippines with it's correct description. May I know you? 1. Eagle- it is an endangered species of birds in the country due to a massive loss of habitat resulting from deforestation in most of it's range. 2. Pawikan- locally known as pawikan, it's decreasing number is due to the big demand for their meat, eggs, oil, and ornamental body parts sold to other countries. 3. Carabao- it is a threatened species in mindoro. Being used as traditional medicine, it's population is now threatened. 4. Flower- it is one of the most beautiful flowers in the country, considered as critically endangered plant due to the destruction of it's wild habitat. 5. Koala- it is found in the island of palawan and now in danger in extinction and vulnerable because of the increase in the island-dwelling population. The activity you have answered earlier are related to how species adapt to the abrupt changes to environment that result to species extinction. B. ENGAGE ( 3 minutes) Establishing a purpose for the lesson Tolerance of species Define tolerance and limiting factors. Give emphasis to the changes in environment that lead to species extinction (water, air, sunlight) Ask the learners: what happens to the species if all environmental conditions are hampered? C. EXLORE (10 minutes) Presenting examples/instances for a new lesson Collaborative Learning 1. The students will be divided into 5 groups 2. As they have already their group, they will read the comic strip. One of them they will play as kent and the other one as kaylee 3. They will identify and list down those abrupt changes in the environment would lead to species extinctions. 4. They will be given 10-15 minutes to finish the task. Each group will choose a representative to present and explain their outputs. Please be guided by the following criteria: Criteria for Evaluating Group Activity Accuracy. - 5 points Presentation - 5 points Cooperation - 5 points 15 points D. Explain (15 minutes) Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills Group Presentation and Video Presentation Differentiated instructions. The students will present their output to the class. The teacher will appreciate every learner’s performance. Guide Questions: What causes of extinction? How can changes in the environment affect the continued survival? E.ELABORATE (15 minutes) (Generalization) -Developing mastery (leads to Formative Assessment) -Generalizing and abstractions about the lesson -Finding practical application of concepts and skills in daily living HOTS Discussion The teacher will discuss the expected to answer question. Topic showing PowerPoint Presentation. Choose me in! Students will analyze the following situations. Following are the sets of situations that allow abrupt changes in the environment leading populations of organisms to be threatened or becoming extinct. Learners can choose more than one from the list which could be the cause of the changes on the environment in each situation. Logging Hunting Trapping Climate Change Volcanic Eruption Earthquake Typhoon Habitat loss Flood Disease Forest Fire Erosion 1. The island of Palawan contains one of the oldest, largest, and most diverse rainforest in southeast asia. 80% of Palawan’s endemic are found on an around Cleopatra’s needle. However, 31 endangered and threatened species inhabit the forests. 2. On January 12, 2020, the taal volcano in the Philippines began to spew cases, ashes, and lava, into the air causing most of the vegetation like coffee, rice, corn, cacao, and banana crop to be damaged. Dozens of people perished, large numbers of livestock and pets were also left behind and about 30% of the fish cages on the lake were destroyed. E. Evaluate (5minutes) Evaluating Learning Assessment Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write the chosen letter on the space provided before the number. 1. Which of the following human activities cause species extinction? a. Destroying animals habitat environment c. Introducing new species to area b. Polluting the d. All of the above 2. Why should we protect endangered animals? a. Endangered animals could be bred for fur. b.. Endangered animals are worth a lot of money. c.. Endangered animals could be used for experiment. d.. Endangered animals are the last remaining animals of that species. 3. Which of the following changes in the environment may happen if forest fire occurs? a. Increased plant and animal diversity b. Forest fires decrease carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. c. Ashes contribute much of the nutrients and give richness to the soil. d. The natural cycles of forests are disturbed and some species disappear while invasive plants multiply. 4. Which of the following refers to a place where species live and reproduce? a. Wildlife b. Extinction c. Habitat d. Biodiversity 5. Which of the following is the term applied to a species without living members? a. Extinct b. Endangered c. Troubled d. Threatened F. Extend (2 minutes) Additional activities for application for remediation Extend Fill in below using the concepts you learned. Extinct Species 1. Asian Elephant 2. Cebu warty pig Why did they become extent? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 5. Endangered Species 1. Tamara’s 2. Philippine Eagle How can extinction be prevented? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Prepared by: Sheryl B.
