Notes for the final project Frida Khala Source: https://www.fridakahlo.org/ - Frida was born of Mexican descent and was born with polio at a young age. Additionally, she has had over 30 body operations in her lifetime. These operations were caused by unfortunate events and mainly a bus accident in which a steel rail pierced through her hip and fractured her back. - As a person of color, Frida showcased her vision as Latina Artist through her confidence to be outspoken and to make art no matter the unfortunate circumstances. She is an icon for the empowerment of female artists - Instead of these operations being setbacks in her life as a marginalized person physically her family encouraged her to paint by offering resources such as paint materials and a special easel so she could paint in bed. - During one of her injuries, she was in a body cast for three months and to combat this physical and psychological pain she painted her first self-portrait. - What makes her art unique is that she utilizes elements of Latin American tastes and personal imagery to convey a similar artistry that is presented in the style of the classic Europe Burgoiese art - Kahlo's art was greatly influenced by the political and social challenges of her era, including the Mexican Revolution, the rise of fascism, and the prejudice faced by women. These topics inspired her work and showed in it how she personally felt about them. - Frida Kahlo’s love life wasn’t as easy for her as well. She was separated with artist Diego Rivera multiple times and had to move constantly. - Frida has wanted a child, but after previous accidents she was not able to bear one. Shes had two miscarriages and one of her pieces of art was actually inspired by the second miscarriage - Henry Ford Hospital 1932 - At first glance I saw this photo and I was weirdly confused by the raw and authenticity Kahlo decides to show. - After focusing on the petucilar objects she decides to have flying out of her body. I realized that this piece if the most genuine art you can get - She displays the true cause of her sadness and the envrionment she is in. Herny ford Hospital is the location in which she had her second miscarriage. The most terrifying about this miscarriage image is the pelvis. Kahlo is self aware that even though she longs for a child for so long, she knows that she can’t bear one because of her injuries with the pelvis. This image is touching to the physical and emotional self, as she had to go through the pain of bearing a child and finding out that the child was a miscarriage. - Although this image is not real and a fantasy, the intention and message she is invoking about her personal life is authentic and terrifying at the same time. My Dress Hang there 1933 - I noticed the immense detail that Frida displays in her painting through this work of artt - This piece depicts her awareness of her cultural roots and heritage. During this time while she was in a relationship with Diego Rivera, she was forced to move to mutiple locations around the U.S and one location she stayed at was NYC. - While most of Frida’s paintings feature her own personal imagery, her element of her “face” is depicted through the Mexican Dresss she has in the center of the image. - Everything around her is the chaos and noise that New York has mde her feel. She misses her home and is begging for a stay at her heritage home in Mexico. - The Two Fridas, 1939 - On the left side of Frida is in a traditional mexican tehuana dress and the other side is a modern dressed Frida. Both of these sides encapsulate the central personality of Frida. - The authenticity she depicts in this image is the open hearts in her body. The left side with the Tehuana dress shows the misconection and sadness she feels after her seperation from her partner. Hence on the left side she is letting the blood drip out to down to her dress. - The clouded background is the mass chaos she is dealing with in this time of emotions of sadness.
