PICA DISODER
A WORLD OF DISCOVERY
By: Tejo, Ivanka, Jashainie
DEFINATION OF PICA
Pica is an eating disorder characterized by the persistent
consumption of non-nutritive, foodless substances over a
period of at least one month. People with pica may eat
items such as dirt, clay, chalk, hair, paper, soap, cloth, ice,
and other objects that are not normally considered food.
This behavior is considered atypical and can have serious health
consequences, including nutritional deficiencies, gastrointestinal
problems, and the risk of ingesting harmful or toxic substances. Pica can
affect people of all ages, but it is more commonly observed in children,
pregnant women, and individuals with developmental disabilities. The
exact cause of pica is not fully understood, but it is believed to be
influenced by a combination of biological, psychological, and
environmental factors.
SOME FACTORS OF
HAVING PICA
• Nutritional deficiencies: Pica may be a way for
the body to seek out missing nutrients or
minerals.
• Sensory issues: People with sensory processing
disorders may have a heightened need for tactile or
oral stimulation, leading to the consumption of non food items.
• Mental health issues: Pica can co-occur with other
mental health conditions, such as autism spectrum
disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or
intellectual disabilities.
• Cultural and familial influences: Some cultural or
familial practices may encourage or normalize the
consumption of certain non-food items.
HOW PICA EFFECTS US
Pica can lead to significant and severe health issues. These consequences may encompass
harm to the digestive system, which includes the stomach and intestines, the potential for
blockages within the intestinal tract, the risk of poisoning due to ingesting harmful or toxic
substances, and an increased susceptibility to infections.
