About Pelli
César Pelli was born in Tucumán, Argentina, on October 12,
1926. His father was a municipal civil servant and his mother
a teacher. The architect completed his undergraduate
studies at the National University of Tucumán; in Argentina
students complete high school and have a Master's degree
from the University of Illinois, School of Architecture at
Urbana-Champaign.
Before beginning his practice in 1977, he worked for
prestigious firms such as Eero Saarinen and Associates,
Daniel, Mann, Johnson, & Mendenhall, and Gruen Associates.
He became a director of design from 1964 to 1968 and from
1968 to 1977, respectively. During those years he perfected
the technology of glass skins, producing buildings of
lightweight, translucent quality. He served as dean of the
School of Architecture at Yale University from 1977 to 1984
and established (1977) his practice, Cesar Pelli and
Associates (now Pelli Clarke Pelli) in New Haven,
Connecticut.

University. They survive him, as do two grandchildren. Ms.
Balmori died in 2016.

Architectural Philosophy
César Pelli has always avoided
formalistic preconceptions in
his designs. He firmly believes
that buildings should be
responsible citizens and that
the aesthetic qualities of a
building should grow from the
specific characteristics of each
project such as its location, its
construction technology, and
its purpose. In search of the
most appropriate response to
each project, his designs have
covered a wide range of
solutions and materials.

try to make them into
responsible and contributing

PELLI'S
Quotes/Sayings
I realize that having a style would
be very beneficial for my practice
from a marketing standpoint, but I
can't do it. I believe my
responsibilities as an architect are
to design the most appropriate
building for the place. Each place
has a distinct culture and function,
which for me requires an
appropriate answer.

"There are many things that
interest me but nothing that
comes close to my love of
architecture. Architecture is
my life.’"
"The desire to reach for the sky
runs very deep in the human
psyche."
