Brian Dunleavy defines trenches as “long, deep ditches dug as protective defenses—are most often associated with World War I, and the results of trench warfare in that conflict were hellish indeed.” (Dunleavy 1). Soldiers not only had to fight from these trenches, but they also had to eat, sleep and live within them. They faced very grueling conditions.
