Facts about the life in trenches Trenches were very muddy, uncomfortable and the toilets overflowed. These conditions caused some soldiers to develop medical problems such as trench foot. Soldiers only got to sleep in the afternoon during daylight and at night for an hour at a time. During rest time they wrote letters and played card games. Trenches were 1-2 metres wide and 3 metres deep. Trenches usually had an embankment at the top and a barbed wire fence. Trenches in World War 1 would be reinforced with sandbags and wooden beams. In the trench itself, the bottom was covered with wooden boards called duckboards.
