CELLS (PLANT CELLS) WHO CAN RECOGNIZE THIS? AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR? WHAT ABOUT THESE GOOD PEOPLE? CELLS Cell is the smallest and basic unit of life. Remember… • Prokaryote – Simplest cells – Single-celled – Few, basic organelles – DNA floating around, uncontained Free DNA strands • Eukaryote – Complex cells – Single or multi-celled – More organelles – DNA contained within the nucleus Prokaryote or Eukaryote? • Are animal and plant cells prokaryote cells or eukaryote cells? • How do you know? Eukaryote! • Plant and animals cells are both eukaryote cells, because they are multicellular and contain many organelles within each cell, including a nucleus where the DNA is stored. ORGANELLES • An organelle is a subcellular structure inside a cell that has one or more specific jobs to perform. parts of a plant cell/ cell organelles CELL ORGANELLES/ parts of a plant cell • 1. CELL WALL: The outermost layer of a cell found only in plant cell, it gives support and protection to the plant cell, but does not control what enters or leaves it • (note: that fungi and bacteria also have cell walls, but these are not made of cellulose). 2. Cell membrane: a very thin layer surrounding every cell which controls what enters and leaves the cell. in a plant cell, the cell membrane is pressed tightly against the cell wall and so cannot be seen as a separate structure • 3. Cytoplasm: the material that fills a cell; it is a gel made of many substances, including proteins dissolved in water and cell organelles, chemical reaction takes place in it. • 4. Nucleus: a structure found in most cells, surrounded by a membrane, in which chromosomes/DNA are found; information held on the chromosomes controls the activities of the cell • 5. Chloroplast: the structure found in some plant cells which looks green because it contains chlorophyll, chloroplasts are the site for photosynthesis • 6. Mitochondrion (plural: mitochondria) : a structure inside the cell where energy is released, it is also referred to as powerhouse of the cell. 7. large central food vacuole: • • • • it is the main and biggest vacuole in plant cell it may occupy more than 90% of the cell space it helps in food storage it contain large amount of liquid called cell sap which is a solution of glucose CLASS ACTIVITY •ATTEMPT THE QUESTIONS ON THE WORKSHEET YOU ARE PROVIDED WITH? class work • the layer on the outside of a plant cell is called the cell ............... • the thin layer between the cell wall and the cytoplasm is the cell.......... • the clear jelly that fills most of a cell is called ........... • the large space inside the cell is the ............... • it contains ....................... • the round, dark structure inside the cytoplasm is the ................. • the small oval structure inside the cytoplasm is the ........... • the small oval structures inside the cytoplasm are .......... • the cytoplasm also contains ....................
