Prized Possesion story 23: They had to do something… People were counting on them, countless lives were resting upon their shoulders [or so she was told] and yet Jeniffer still struggled not to wonder if she made the right decision in agreeing to the task. Sure they were going to change humanity, but deep inside her, her six sense was telling her something she could not quite understand. They were leaving at sunrise tomorrow. Jen went over the facts in her head thousands of times: 6 other people who had been selected at random were going to accompany her, they unlike her, had not had the choice in risking their lives. In a way Jen did not have one either. As the governor's daughter, she was expected to lead and nothing less. Sighing a great and unsatisfied sigh, she quickly and quietly creeped into her bed eager to get the day over with. Tomorrow she would be risking her life for the greater good, the only problem was that she did not know for what. Dawn came unexpectedly as the sky converted from, coal black to an inky orange and pinkish colour that jumbled together like a watercolours blending together. Briskly she got dressed in a dark comfortable attire and triple checked her pack to make sure she was not missing anything. This would be a long journey but they were prevented from bringing more than a small rucksack of things. As she slowly descended the spiral stairs a thought hit her abruptly, this could be the last time she was walking down the stairs, much less set foot in this town. No time to think about that though, because just as Jen stepped down from the final step she noticed that six people were waiting for her rather impatiently. Taking one last look around her, she went over to greet them. They all wore a grim expression on their pale faces. Anxious to get this adventure over with. Before they departed on their expedition they were instructed to head over to the main square to attain the final information on what they were supposed to collect from, what they say, a man whose heart was darker than the black hole itself. Sooner than she would have liked, the group neared deserted square. No one dared leave their homes at this hour, all curtains were pulled tightly closed to conceal the inside of each small cottage. No one wanted to be the first person to leave into the tireless heat. Jen’s village had always been a nightmare to all the residents. Every day, each one of the citizens were forced to work 10 hours straight and that was if they were lucky. Unfortunately, the work itself was incredibly strenuous, each person older than 13 were sent to a field to tend to the crops in the hot strain of the sun. Jen herself was one of the few people who was not sent there herself. She knew that everyone despised her for it. The rusted fountain at last came into view. They had arrived. 2 people stood in the centre with their mouths pulled in peeved expressions. The tallest standing on the side stepped forward slightly. She wore pure black clothes and her long hair was pulled back in an intimidating bun. Opening her mouth slightly she started speaking, “Congragulation to all we are happy to see you all here today. I hope you all know what a great privilege it is to get chosen for such a dangerous and risky task.” Her squeaky voice made her appear as a sort of mouse. As she stopped talking the petite man in the centre stepped forward, cleared his voice, and in a deep booming voice he continued. “I am sure you are all desperate to know what you are risking your lives for so get ready to be blown away.” He paused to give a dramatic effect. “You are to be taking a potion from a mans castle that would be able to cure all diseases and vanish infection from our world.” The small group of messengers all turned their attention on them, searching her and the other faces for a reaction. Jen was expecting many things from this meeting, that they were trying to acquire a potion that made crops grow faster. She would never have expected the government to be so selfless and to put the needs of the people in front of their selfish want. Jen took a closer look at their faces and noticed how smug they were with themselves. Once again Jen got the feeling that there was something brewing beneath what they were saying. Jen noticed that they were all saying good bye. They were shaking hands with the messengers as they were wished good luck. Too quickly they were left alone in the square, the sun was already high in the sky as they watched the people slowly disappear across the corner. It felt to real too soon. This was it.
