Through this course students should be able to
CO1 :: identify formal writing skills in drafting various administrative and professional documents
CO2 :: compose grammatically correct communication by using varied structures
CO3 :: analyze sentences containing learned vocabulary and use appropriate grammatical
structures in speaking and writing
CO4 :: apply the learned strategies of skimming and scanning to discover the general idea and to
find specific information in a familiar text
CO5 :: evaluate their grammatical and communicative competence
CO6 :: develop and assist students to recognize and articulate writing and comprehension skills
for employability
Unit I
Subject-verb agreement : singular and plural nouns, verbs, rules of subject-verb agreement
Pronoun Agreement : introduction to pronoun agreement, introduction to various types of
pronouns, rules of pronoun agreement
Verb tense : introduction to verb tense, rules of verb tense errors
Unit II
Voice and accent : vowels and consonants, word stress, sentence stress
Unit III
Vocabulary : root words, synonyms and antonyms, contextual vocabulary, phrasal verbs, various
exercises based on antonyms and synonyms
Reading comprehension : importance of reading comprehension, types of questions in reading
comprehension, reading comprehension questions based on main idea, reading comprehension
questions based supporting idea, exercises based on main idea and supporting idea questions
Unit IV
Email Writing : purpose and functional role of e-mail, structural components of e-mail, do’s and
don’ts of e-mail writing
Sentence completion : introduction to cloze test, eliminating options using verbal clues, exercises
based on cloze test
Unit V
Analogy : types of analogies- synonym relationship, antonym relationship, cause-effect relationship,
characteristics relationship, symbolic relationship, whole- part & part-part relationship, analogy
questions, patterns of questions, common tricky questions, eliminating options in analogy
Unit VI
Direct and Indirect speech : narration and narrative, descriptive formations, persuasive writing
