Question:
Explain Coke's Role in Britain's Industrial Revolution.
Answer:
The invention of coke smelting during the Industrial Revolution had a significant and lasting
impact. It allowed for the production of cheaper iron, which was essential for the development of
the railroad, steamships, and mechanization of industry. Abraham Darby's success in 1709 was a
major innovation that changed the way things were done, as coke replaced charcoal in blast
furnaces. Over the next 150 years, there were many improvements made to the process that led to
increased productivity. While technical advancements were made, they were more neutral than the
original invention. Between 1709 and 1850, there were substantial savings in all inputs,
particularly coal and labor.
“Many of these improvements were a result of local learning. ”
