Classification EN4V-IIIh-39
Reference: Self- Learning Modules in English 4

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity
A. Daily Routine
Learners’ Activity
Prayer
Checking of Attendance
Cleanliness
B. Review
Last time, we discussed the difference
between prefix and suffix. Where do you add
prefixes?
We add prefixes before the root word.
Good! When do we add suffixes?
We add suffixes after the root word.
I have balloons with words inside it and you
will tell me the root word of the word that you
will choose. Is that clear?
Yes, Sir!
( The learners will do the review activity.)
That’s great! Is there any question
regarding your previous lesson?
Nothing more, Sir!
C. Motivation
Yes, Sir!
( The pupils will sing the song.)
Children, please stand because we will
sing a song entitled, “Tong-Tong-Tong
Pakitong- Kitong.” Are you ready?
Can you help me find the crabs?
Children, I have 4 baskets here and I
want you to paste the words (crabs) you got to
where it belongs.
Sure, Ma’am!
(The pupils will look for the crabs with words
written on it.)
(The pupils will paste the words to the baskets
according to their correct category.)
1. Shapes
2. Musical Symbols
3. National Heroes
4. Planets
( The pupils will read the words.)
That’s good, children! Now, let us
read the words you pasted in each basket.
D. Presentation of the Lesson
Children, can you add some words
that are not here?
Are these words in this basket
related to one another?
( The pupils will give more answers in each
category.)
Yes, Sir because they have the same
characteristic/s.
We call it classification.
That’s nice, children. If we group
words according to their similarity, what do you
call to this process?
E. Discussion of the Lesson
Very good! When do we group or
classify words?
That’s great! Let us try to find the
word that shouldn’t belong to the group and tell
me why did you say so.
We classify or group words if they have similar
characteristics.
1. Mango, Grapes, Ampalaya, Apple
(fruits)
2. Uncle, Brother, Priest, Mother (males)
3. Japan, Philippines, China, Nueva Ecija (
countries)
4. Dog, Tiger, Lion, Zebra (zoo animals)
5. Rose, Santan, Bougainvillea, Oregano
(flowering plants)
Now, children I want you to look for
the missing word/s in each sentence. Remember Yes, Sir!
to find the relationship of the first two words if
1. A cat is to an animal as a rose is to
they are similar or different with one another so
______.
that you can identify the missing word. Is that
2. A mother is to a girl as father is to
clear, children?
______.
How did you get the answer? What
did you use as a basis?
Nice! If you used the first pair of
words and look for their relationship as the
basis of finding the missing word, what do you
call this process?
3. Feet are to walk as hands are to
_______.
4. Tree is to climb as sea is to __________.
5. A fire is to hot as ice to ____________.
We used the first pair of words as the basis of
finding the missing word.
What is an analogy?
We call this process an analogy.
Great! Will it be hard for you to find
the missing if you cannot identify the first pair
of words?
Is a comparison of two things that may have
similar or opposite characteristics or features.
Yes, Sir.
Good! So, what do you do to find
the correct word in the analogy?
It is always a must for us to look for the
relationship of the first pair of words before
finding the missing word in the analogy.
Great! Let’s try this group activity
Yes, Sir!
about analogy. Each group will need a
whiteboard and a marker. All you have to do is
1. A ripe banana is to yellow as an unripe
to find the missing word to complete the
mango is to ____________.
analogy. Are you ready?
2. Birds are to feathers as fish is to
__________.
3. Soy sauce is to salty as sugar is to
___________.
4. A pillow is to soft a rock is to
_________.
5. As small is to tiny as huge is to
F. Generalization
__________.
When do we group words?
Good! What do we need to do in
order to find the missing word in the analogy?
Is there any question regarding
our lesson for today?
G. Application
You are to work with your
seatmate. Get his/her English notebook and
write a category where he/she needs to write 5
words related to the given category or group.
Ex. COLORS, ANIMALS, PLACES, etc.
We group words if they have similar
characteristics or features.
We must look for the relationship of the first
pair of words before finding the missing word in
the analogy.
None, Sir.
IV. Evaluation
Complete the sentences by supplying each with the word from the gift box below. Write your
answers on your answer sheet.
