CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
The increasing popularity of social media platforms, especially TikTok,
among the younger generation has sparked interest in exploring their role in
fostering 21st-century skills. The Partnership for 21st Century Learning (2017),
emphasized the significance of these skills in preparing students for the
workforce and success in the modern world. However, traditional education
systems often prioritize content knowledge over skills development, resulting in
a gap in skills among students, particularly in communication, collaboration,
creativity, and critical thinking.
A report published in EdTech Magazine (2018), found that TikTok has
gained considerable attention in education, with several studies exploring its
potential in promoting 21st-century skills like communication, collaboration, and
creativity. These skills are crucial for students to prepare for future careers and
become productive members of society. Incorporating TikTok into education
provides a unique and engaging platform for students to develop and enhance
these skills.

Emerging research suggests that social media usage, including
platforms like TikTok, is associated with higher levels of creativity and social
competence (Wang et al. 2018). TikTok specifically has been commended forits
ability to nurture creativity and self-expression in young individuals (Katz, 2020).
However, there are also challenges associated with incorporating TikTok
into education. One challenge is the need for teachers to be trained on how to
use the platform effectively. Another challenge is the potential for students to
be exposed to inappropriate content. Additionally, there are ethical implications
to consider, such as the need to protect students’ privacy and the need to be
mindful of the platform's addictive nature. Despite these challenges, there is a
great deal of potential for TikTok to be used in education. The platform can be
used to promote 21st-century skills, such as communication, collaboration,
creativity, and critical thinking. It can also be used to provide students with
opportunities for personalized learning and civic engagement.
As TikTok continues to grow in popularity, it is important to consider how
the platform can be used in education safely and effectively. By addressing the
challenges and ethical implications of using TikTok, we can ensure that the
platform is used to its fullest potential to benefit students.

Overall, this research study seeks to bridge the gap between the
importance of 21st-century skills and the potential of social media platforms like
TikTok in promoting these skills among students.
Theoretical Framework
The theoretical framework of this study is based on the constructivist
theory of learning. Constructivism is a theory that proposes that learning is an
active process where students construct their understanding of knowledge
through meaningful experiences. This means that students learn by doing,
interacting with the world around them, and reflecting on their experiences.
TikTok is a social media platform that allows users to create and share
short videos. The interactive nature of TikTok and the opportunities for sharing
and receiving feedback align with the principles of constructivism.
By engaging with TikTok, students can actively participate in creating
and sharing content, allowing them to construct their understanding of 21stcentury skills.
Through TikTok's interactive features, such as video creation, editing,
and effects, students can actively develop communication, collaboration,
creativity, and critical thinking skills.
3
PRESIDENT DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL HIGH SCHOOL
Senior High School Department
8th GHQ Brgy. Katuparan Taguig City
The platform provides a unique opportunity for students to explore and
express their ideas, thoughts, and perspectives, fostering their active
construction of knowledge.
Specifically, constructivism can be applied to TikTok in the following
ways:
I – Communication
TikTok can be used to develop communication skills by allowing
students to create and share videos that communicate their ideas and thoughts
to others.
II – Collaboration
TikTok can be used to develop collaboration skills by allowing students
to work together to create videos.
III - Creativity
TikTok can be used to develop creativity skills by allowing students to
express themselves in new and innovative ways.
IV - Critical thinking
TikTok can be used to promote 21st-century skills in a variety of ways.
For example, it can be used to:
4
PRESIDENT DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL HIGH SCHOOL
Senior High School Department
8th GHQ Brgy. Katuparan Taguig City
IV.A - Develop critical thinking skills by allowing students to analyze and
evaluate information; students can watch videos from different sources
and then compare and contrast the information presented. They can also
create videos that require them to think critically about a topic.
IV.B - Learn about different cultures by watching videos from people
around the world.
For example, students can watch videos about different customs and
traditions or create videos about their culture and share them with others.
IV.C - Practice problem-solving skills by creating videos that solve
problems. For example, students can create videos that show how to fix
a problem or create videos that challenge viewers to solve a problem.
The theoretical framework that supports the use of TikTok for promoting
21st-century skills is constructivism, a theory of learning that states that
students learn by actively constructing their knowledge. TikTok can be a
valuable tool for promoting constructivist learning because it allows students to
create and share their content. This allows them to actively participate in the
learning process and to construct their understanding of the world.
Overall, TikTok is a valuable tool that can be used to promote 21stcentury skills in a variety of ways. The constructivist theory of learning provides

a theoretical framework for understanding how TikTok can be used to promote
these skills.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This chapter presents relevant studies and literature concerning the
topic of the study.
TikTok Application
According to Saedah Siraj and Vijay (in Astra, 2015), that stated mlearning is using of a mobile device to have possession which can organize
learning anywhere and anytime. Thus, online learning is carried out by most
educational institutions by adopting the use of technology, especially online
platforms and social media applications with the aim of ensuring students do
not miss the material and can be accessed anytime and anywhere.
According to Edwards (2022), the idea is to promote the use of the app
to complete an assignment, which engages students on a platform they can
relate to and encourages them to understand concepts. It can be used to foster
collaboration in group scenarios, and help with peer-to-peer teaching.
According to Dilon (2020), stated that TikTok is a social media
application that allows users to create and share short videos. It has become a
popular platform for creative expression and entertainment among younger
generations. Several studies have explored the potential of Tiktok in education,
specifically in promoting 21st-century skills.

as Musical.ly, has entertained students during quarantine, and has allowed
them to de-stress from exams and schoolwork. They said its creates a space
for students to be creative and share what they love doing.
According to Langreo (2022), that using TikTok, critical thinking forming
opinions and values, or understanding key moments in history, surface learning
just doesn’t do the subjects justice. It may be able to provide one piece of a
greater puzzle, but it isn’t suited to deeper thinking.

Statistical Treatment of Data
In the treatment and analysis of data, the following types of statistical
treatment will be used: Frequency, Percentage, Weighted Mean, and Pearson
correlation coefficient (r).
Frequency and Percentage Distribution. A percentage frequency
distribution is a data display that shows the percentage of observations for each
data point or set of data points.
Weighted Mean. Weighted mean is a mean where some values
contribute more than others. Since the researchers have a population for its
respondents, weighted mean was used to assess the effectiveness of TikTok
Application to the Students’ for their 21st-Century Skills.
Pearson correlation coefficient (r). Pearson correlation is measures
the strength of the linear relationship between two variables. Pearson’s r was
used to assess the effectiveness of TikTok Application to the Students’ for their
21st-Century Skills.
