Causes of Increased Anxiety and Depression in Today’s World
Have you ever heard the phrase, “People with anxiety or depression die 7.9 years earlier than
others”? Anxiety is a sense of disquiet that can range from minor to severe and includes concern or
dread. Depression is also a persistent sense of melancholy and loss of interest that keeps a person
from engaging in daily activities. At present, tense moments, poverty, or an individual’s health might
cause people to feel more anxious and depressed.
The first cause of increased anxiety and depression is the exhausting moments in a person’s
life. Misunderstandings with the closed ones, divorce or breakups in relationships can be the most
dreadful experiences in a person’s life. Such problems may arise because of one’s obstinacy or endure
a prolonged absence. Failure in career or poor academic performance is another cause of being
anxious and gloomy. These types of incidents can also result for being harassed or bullied by certain
people, either in person or online. School environment may also be a cause of depression in students,
where one may be a target of nepotism. In addition to these factors, financial issues can also
contribute to anxiety and sadness.
Monetary crisis, the second cause, can also intensify anxiety and depression. Loans can be a
great problematic issue to middle class people as most of the time the interest’s rates can be higher;
for which one may face monetary crisis. Also increased debt load, fees and high penalties can drive a
person to depression and anxiety as most of them cannot go on with the agreement, which could also
lead the person to drug addictions, gambling, or suicidal thoughts. Bankruptcy or loss of a job also
plays significant role for being depressed and anxious, that became much prevalent because of the
COVID-19 pandemic. While we came up with the afore-mentioned facts, it is important to note that
an individual’s health is still a concern.
The third cause of increased anxiety and depression is the health of a person. A person may
suffer from anxiety and depression which he or she inherited from older family members like parents
and grandparents. Low level of haemoglobin, imbalanced serotonin level, excessive histamine
production, low thyroxin hormone, or obesity can lead to increased anxiety and depression to a
3
person. Medications like Corticosteroids may also be responsible for mood swing, aggressiveness and
short temper that results to anxiety or low spirits. Hence, family inheritance and medications can
contribute to the rise of anxiety and depression.
In short, moments full of frustration, insolvency, or even the state of people’s health results
the rise of anxiety and depression. To avoid putting ourselves in such stressful situations, we should
learn better anxiety management and keep patient. Also, we should not be stubborn with our
surroundings. Rather, we should know how to compromise and be an ideal being in the society.
