Name: Purvaansh Valera
Stimuli: Biology/Science
Specific Topic: Model analysis/interpretation
My Research question is:
-
How do doctors use treatment/effectiveness models to decide the dosage of the respective
medication?
My Aim is:
-
My aim for the IA is to investigate and analyze how doctors use treatment/effectiveness
models to determine the appropriate dosage of medication for their patients. This
investigation may involve researching different types of models used in medical practice,
examining case studies or examples of how doctors have used these models to make
dosage decisions, and evaluating the accuracy and effectiveness of these models in
predicting the optimal dosage for a given patient.
My Rationale is:
-
I believe understanding how doctors use treatment/effectiveness models to decide
medication dosage can provide valuable insights into the complex decision-making
processes involved in medical treatment. This information may be beneficial for patients,
doctors, and other healthcare professionals who are interested in improving the quality
and efficacy of medical care. By investigating this topic and analyzing the different
models used, I can gain a deeper understanding of how medical professionals approach
dosage determination, and potentially identify ways to improve the process.
What are the math connections (syllabus topics) to your area of interest?
-
Firstly, the research question involves statistical analysis, which is a fundamental topic in
IB Mathematics. Statistical analysis includes topics such as data collection,
representation, interpretation, and analysis. In your IA, you will likely analyze data from
medical studies or case studies, which will require you to apply statistical concepts
(regression lines, probabilities, correlations coefficients) and techniques to make
conclusions about the effectiveness of different treatment models. Additionally, my
research question involves the use of calculus, which is another key topic in IB
Mathematics. Calculus includes topics such as limits, derivatives, and integrals, which
can be applied to model and analyze a range of real-world phenomena. In your IA, you
may need to use calculus to analyze and optimize the dosage recommendations provided
by different models. Overall, there are several ways my research question connects to our
IB Math syllabus.
What are some things that you may have to research in order to answer your research question?
-
Different treatment/effectiveness models: I will need to research and analyze the various
treatment/effectiveness models used by doctors to determine the appropriate dosage of
medication for different patients. This research may involve studying medical literature
and analyzing case studies.
-
Different treatment/effectiveness models: I will need to research and analyze the various
treatment/effectiveness models used by doctors to determine the appropriate dosage of
medication for different patients. This research may involve studying medical literature,
interviewing doctors or healthcare professionals, and analyzing case studies. To evaluate
the accuracy and effectiveness of different treatment/effectiveness models, I will need to
gather and analyze medical data and statistics. This may involve studying clinical trial
results, analyzing patient data, and performing statistical tests to evaluate the validity of
different models.
What are the definitions you will need to define for people not familiar with this topic?
-
Treatment model: A mathematical model that describes the relationship between a
treatment and its effect on a particular health outcome. Effectiveness model: A
mathematical model that describes the effectiveness of a particular treatment or
intervention, typically in terms of its ability to improve health outcomes or reduce the
risk of adverse events. Dosage: The amount of medication or treatment given to a patient
at a particular time, typically measured in units such as milligrams or micrograms.
Pharmacokinetics: The study of how drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and
excreted by the body, and how these processes affect the concentration of the drug in the
body over time. In general, the vocabulary that will be used in this IA should be relatively
common.
What are some possible visual representations (graphs, tables, diagrams) that you might want to
have?
-
Dose-response curve: A graphical representation of the relationship between drug dosage
and its effect on a particular health outcome, typically shown as a curve or line graph.
Box-and-whisker plot: A graphical representation of the distribution of a set of data,
typically used to compare the effectiveness of different treatments or dosages. Scatter
plot: A graphical representation of the relationship between two variables, typically used
to analyze the correlation between drug dosage and patient outcomes. Flowchart: A
diagrammatic representation of the decision-making process used by doctors to determine
medication dosage, including the different treatment/effectiveness models and factors that
influence dosage decisions.
