The example I have chosen is potty training a child. In order to encourage the behavior the parent must first teach the child the correct action to take whenever they have to go to the bathroom. This will associate the feeling of having to go to the bathroom with actually going to the bathroom. Once this has been established, the child might not always go to the bathroom for a variety of reasons. They may feel lazy, forget, or just not want to go. At this stage, the use of positive reinforcement will help immensely. A parent can use many different methods for this, but a very effective way would be to give the child candy once they have completed the action. The parent can give the candy using a fixed ratio so that the child has a goal in mind of how many times they must go to the bathroom to get candy. The cycle would repeat over and over because the child knows they will get candy after they go to the bathroom, for example, 3 times.
