Alone together - People want to be with each other but also elsewhere Hiding from each other Goldilocks effect - Not too close, not too far, just right “someday, someday, but certainly not now, I would like to learn how to have a conversation” What’s wrong with having a conversation? No one is listening We are tempted by machines that offer companionship We expect more from technology and less from each other Technology appears to us most where we are most vulnerable We’re lonely but we’re afraid of intimacy The illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship I share therefore I am Connection to Isolation If we don’t teach our children to be alone, they will only know how to be lonely Ateneo De Naga University College of Business and Accountancy S/Y 2022 - 2023 Name: Sherlane Junelle B. Bonde Section: AC11 REACTION PAPER ON “CONNECTED, BUT ALONE” The ted talk of Sherry Turkle is mainly about how most of us use or rely on our phones even though there are also people we can communicate with. The ted talk shared a number of insights that talks about how technology affects us holistically. One of these is the idea of how it does not change what we do but rather it changes who we are. She also stated the Goldilocks Effect which means that people like the idea of being not too close and not too far, just right with each other. Turkle shared that we tend to feel that no one is listening to us that is why we opt to use or rely on our gadgets since it gives us the value of companionship. Therefore, I disagree with the side of Turkle which says that we are much connected with our gadgets or technology that it causes negative effects on us holistically. It is really undeniable that technology helps us in many ways, most especially in this time. Now, we can see that we use technology almost for everyday and we somehow cannot communicate with other people without the help of it. Technology made it a lot easier for us to communicate, to connect, and to find a companion. It helped us send messages, calls, and videos more conveniently. We just need to always keep in our mind that we must use technology in moderation for us to avoid addiction. The idea of having newly found friends through the help of technology is also relevant in this time. Technology also helps us escape the pain our reality is giving us and helps us do self reflection. The video entitled “Connected, But Alone” by Sherry Turkle could be relatable in many ways possible. People often uses their phones and technology to communicate and to be able to be connected with each other. We would rather choose the idea of communicating to people with the help of technology rather than talking to people physically because it gives us the idea of the illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship. With this, I can really say that there are people who are connected with each other but is still alone.
